Elaine Kress, 92, Minot and formerly of Kenmare and Williston died on Monday, March 27, 2023 in a Minot assisted living center.

Elaine Marie was born on February 24, 1931 at Crosby, North Dakota to Harold and Judyth (Bloom) Scarr.  Elaine’s family lived in Alamo where she was educated and she graduated from Alamo High School in 1949.  While in high school Elaine was Fall Festival Queen, a cheerleader, sang as a part of a trio in the choir, active in school plays and was a member of the all-tournament team in basketball.

Elaine married Archie Kress on September 30, 1950 in Alamo, ND.  They made their home in Selz, Wheelock, Epping and Arnegard while Archie was employed by the Great Northern Railroad.  The family moved to Williston and then to Minot in 1965 when Archie was employed by Farmers Insurance Group.  Elaine and Archie purchased the San Way Ve Motel in Kenmare in 1976 and operated the motel until 1990 when they returned to Minot.  Archie died on January 5, 2020.  Most recently, Elaine had been residing at the Somerset Court Assisted Living Center for the past 5.5 years where she had received outstanding care.

Elaine was very active in the Lutheran churches of the communities where she resided.  She taught Sunday School, Bible School, participated in church circles and Bible studies, sang in the choir and was a prayer partner.  She served on the church council of Bethany Lutheran Church and was a member of its Altar Guild.  An active volunteer for many years at the Norsk Hostfest, she was a representative at the Import Shop and once belonged to the Samovar while living in Kenmare.  Also, she was a member of the Community Concert Association, Minot Curling Club, Elks Lodge, served as chairwoman for the Bethany Lutheran Church Hostfest Booth and was a Trinity Hospice volunteer for thirty years.  Elaine especially enjoyed travel and made it a priority to be at all of their grandchildren’s baptisms, confirmations, high school and college graduations and destination weddings.  Also, she enjoyed curling, reading, cooking, baking, crafts and playing whist.

Elaine’s loving family includes her children:  Peggy (Rocky) Hager of Summerville SC, Patty (Robbie) Robertson of Velva, Penny (Bill) Gluck of Cary NC and Perry (Mary) Kress of Bismarck; grandchildren:  Joshua (Krystal) Hager, Tiffanee (Tom) McCarney, Rebecca (Elliott) Wiley, Beth (Steve) Denzine, Kate Robertson (Brian Matson), Jessica Gluck, Molly (Bruce) Clark and Logan Kress; great grandchildren:  Monica, Soleil, Tenley, Kaylee, Eleanor, Hilton, Carolyn, Elaine, Stella, Robbie and Grayson; siblings:  Judi (Gary) Martin of Glasgow MT; in-laws: Betty Kress, Russell (Donna) Kress and Betty Scarr and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Elaine was preceded in death by her parents, husband, siblings:  Hilton (Bea) and Bud Scarr; mother-in-law and father-in-law:  George and Maria (McMaster) Kress; in-laws:  Lillian Stubbe, Myrtle Eriksmoen, Pearl Lunde, Esther Storhaug, Delila Scheff and Harvey, Daniel, James, Royal and Leonard Kress.

Celebration of the Life of Elaine Kress:  Monday, April 3, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. in Bethany Lutheran Church – Minot.  A livestream of the service will be available by using https://bethanylutheranchurch58701.com/

Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park – Minot.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service in the church.

Memorials are preferred to the Bethany Foundation or Camp Metigoshe.
