Winona Kay Detlaff, 71, Grafton, formerly of Glenburn, died Sunday, August 28, 2022 in the Grafton Life Skills and Transition Center.
Winona was born on August 7, 1951 at Minot, North Dakota the daughter of Robert and Clara Belle (Smith) Detlaff. She lived with her family near Glenburn until she was 7 years old when she became a resident at Grafton State School (now Grafton Life Skills and Transition Center). She has lived there for the past 64 years.
Winona always looked forward to going to work “Going to school” in her numerous positions, including working in the mailroom, delivering the mail throughout the campus, and sorting donations to the school.
Winona’s hobbies included attending church, playing cards, playing the record player, swinging, singing, and her jobs working with Todd.
Winona did not miss an opportunity to go shopping for clothes (skirts), nail polish, band aids and goodies to take back to the ward for everybody.
Winona never turned down a chance sit in her chair and drink her hot chocolate or coffee and really loved to go to garage sales and out for ice cream
Winona’s family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of Winona’s caregivers throughout the years she was at the Grafton Life Skills and Transition Center. We truly believe they provided the best care and support possible for Winona.
Winona is survived by: siblings, Arnold (Mary) Detlaff, Glenburn, Kevin Detlaff, Monahans, TX, Brent (Patti) Detlaff, Minot, Robert (Sarah) Detlaff, Eau Claire Wi, Colleen (Doc) Mann, Morton, TX and Alicia (Jessie) Detlaff, Mission, TX, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Winona was preceded in death by her parents and sister-in-law, Cherle Detlaff.
Funeral service: Friday, September 2, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at St Paul’s Lutheran Church, Minot. A livestream of the service can be viewed by going to https://www.mtmsales.net/thomas
Interment: Lynch Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, rural Glenburn, upon completion of the UND Anatomical Gifts Program.
Visitation: one hour prior to the start of the service at the church.
