Gladys Mae Rummel

Gladys Mae Rummel, 90, Dickinson, died Saturday, May 28, 2022 surrounded by her family at Country House of Dickinson. Mass of Christian Burial for Gladys will be at 9:30 a.m., Wednesday, June 1, 2022 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton, with Fr. Thomas Wordekemper, OSB as the celebrant. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be on Tuesday, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson, with a rosary at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Mass on Wednesday at the church.

Gladys was born in Bowman on May 20, 1932,  the seventh of eighteen children, born to Frank and Anna (Kuntz) Schulz. She was raised and educated in the Stark and Dunn County area. Upon leaving home, Gladys moved to Dickinson where she worked at Woolworth Department Store.

Gladys married Donald Rummel on September 22, 1953 in Hardin, Montana. They farmed and ranched south of Richardton, where they welcomed their six children, Leon, Karen, Cindy, Sheila, Doug, and Becky.

In 1969, they moved into Richardton and Gladys worked at Klein’s Pharmacy until 1972 when they purchased  the Super Valu store. They operated Don’s Super Valu until 1984, when they semi-retired. Gladys and Donald moved to Dickinson in 2003.

Gladys enjoyed her family, including following her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities. She was a gifted artist, and enjoyed crocheting and gardening. She had a passion for gathering family over a meal, and it was not unusual for extras to drop in unannounced. Gladys also had a tremendous love for her dog, Benji.

Gladys is survived by her children, Leon (Debbie) Rummel, Gladstone, Karen (Randy Larson) Paluga-Larson, Moorhead, MN, Cindy Hayward, Detroit Lakes, MN, Sheila (Duke) Hammerschmidt, Beulah, Doug Rummel, Dickinson, and Becky (Leon) Marcusen, Taylor; grandchildren, Susan (Ryan) Hanna, Levi (Lindsay) Rummel, Eli (Angie) Paluga, Shonna (Jared) Ridgeway, Jessie (Paul) Smith, Anna (Jerrod) Fingalson, Danielle (Dustin) Moe, Josh Hammerschmidt, J. D. Hammerschmidt, Jennifer (Dustin) Mischel, Trevor (Molly) Wilson, Hope (Cody) Mehlhoff along with 28 great-grandchildren.

Also survived by siblings, Pauline Lantz, Delores (Elmer) Wiege, Geraldine Grayson, Dorothy (Bernie) Buresh, Jim Schulz, Mike (Margaret) Schulz, Kate Lindemann, Ralph (Alice) Schulz, and Inez (Merle) Hamann; brothers-in-law, Fred Heidecker, Chuck Hoff, Ralph Messmer, and Jerry (Brenda) Rummel; and sisters-in-law, Patricia Friedt and Bobbie Rummel; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Gladys was preceded in death by her husband Don; parents, Frank and Anna Schulz; father and mother-in-law, Fred and Lottie Rummel; brothers, Alfred and Willie Schulz; sisters, Viola Sand, Elsie Maershbecker, Agnes Heidecker, MaryAnn Hoff, Bernice Harrington, and Jackie Messmer; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Herman Sand, Lorraine Brademeyer, Matt Maerschbecker, Albert Lantz, Helen Schulz, Ron Harrington, Phil Grayson, Ron Lindemann, Pete Gartner, Ione and Bruce Cady, Arnold Rummel, and William J Friedt.

The family would like to thank the staff at Country House of Dickinson for the loving care and friendship of our mother.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to hospice.
