LaVern “Vern” L. Olson

LaVern “Vern” Lee Olson, age 76, of Norwich, North Dakota, passed away on Saturday, August 22, 2025. He was born on April 20, 1949, to Norman Olson and Elaine (Bechtold) Olson.

Vern was a hardworking man who spent his life as a dedicated mechanic. Known for his steady hands, strong work ethic, and generous heart, he was always willing to help others and took pride in providing for his family.

He was married twice in his life. His first marriage blessed him with two daughters, Lori Henderson and Kim Hanson. Following their divorce, he later married Elaine Darling, and from that union they were blessed with three children: Gina Darling, Jodi, and Clint Olson.

Family was important to Vern, and his greatest joy was being a father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He cherished his grandchildren: Emma Olson, Alexis Littlewind, Courtney Caldwell, Zach Hanson, Connor Hanson, and Zoey Hanson. He was also blessed with two great-grandchildren, Zaviar and Collins, who brought him endless joy.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents, Norman and Elaine; his sister, Audrey; his brothers, Cyril Olson and Andy Olson; and his brother-in-law, Arnie Grosz.

He is survived by his children and grandchildren, his great-grandchildren, his sister Lisa Schilling and brother-in-law Darren Schilling, as well as many nieces and nephews who will fondly remember him.

Even though Vern had a quick temper, he had an even bigger heart. He loved simple joys in life—going rummage selling, attending auctions, and taking long walks with his dogs. Later in life, his loyal companions, Champ and Bella, rarely left his side. He spoiled them with love, making sure no night went by without a cup of ice cream. They, too, will miss him dearly.

Vern will be remembered for his devotion to his family, his love for his companions, his skill as a mechanic, and the quiet strength he carried through life.

Funeral Service will be held at the Parker Senior Center on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Please use North Door. Friends and family are welcome to attend and celebrate Vern’s life.
