David William Weiss 82, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at Miller Pointe Care Center, Mandan. A Celebration of Dave’s Life will be held at Bismarck Funeral Home on Monday, April 1, 2024, at 1:00PM. Visitation will begin at 12:00 noon until the time of service. Burial will be at Fairview Cemetery.
David was born in Bismarck on November 30, 1941, to Bill and Margit (Lynne) Weiss. He was the oldest of eight children. He grew up north of Bismarck, where the family operated Weiss House Moving. The business relocated to New Salem after the sale of the land where Menard’s is currently.
Dave was educated in Bismarck and graduated in1959 from Bismarck High School, where he met and fell in love with Bernadette Kaiser. They married on December 17, 1960. Two children were born to this marriage. Carrie Lynn in1962 and Tina Mairi in 1967. Bernadette died of cancer in September of 1968. Dave remarried twice during his lifetime. Linda Dietz in 1973 and Karen Bjerke in 1995. He welcomed stepchildren Shelli Dietz, Jarred Bjerke and Alena Bjerke.
Throughout the years, Dave had many interests, hobbies, and careers, including auto body man for Davis Chevrolet of Bismarck, after graduating from Manpower Votech School for autobody and worked for Dakota sand and gravel, also worked for Tennefoe construction. Dave was also a mechanic, occasional truck driver and all around jack of all trades. He did vehicle restoration, stock car racing and for many years, worked in the family business as a house mover. He took great pride in moving the Teddy Roosevelt cabin from the State Capital Grounds back to Medora. Weiss House Moving was hired to move many popular landmarks locally and statewide, including many of the Buckstop Junction buildings, Little Cottage Cafe, Serendipity House west of Mandan, and a home that Dave helped move across the frozen Missouri River on blocks and dollies.
Dave was known for his gift of gab, his boisterous laugh, his love of country two step, and his trademark bandana that he wore long before Willie Nelson! He spent many hours with friends and family over several cups of coffee at Perkins, and the 147 Truck Stop west of Mandan.
Dave was a kind and gentle man who was always willing to help his family and friends in need. He had an especially soft spot for animals, taking in many cats, dogs, and birds. His most loved were his faithful side-kick Paco, a ringneck mitred, Buster, a white cockatoo, and Speck, a little chihuahua that adored him!
So many people were Blessed to have shared his life over the years. He will be forever missed by his daughters, Carrie (Myron) Schmidt, Tina Weiss (Lynden Ring), both of Mandan; His grandchildren Katarina (Andrew) Johnson, Sawyer Schmidt, Reno McCormick, Vegas George, and Ayrianna Ring and his great grandchild Ailo Anders Johnson, brothers and sisters Lindy Weiss, Gordon (Rosie McGuire), Nancy (Vance) Van Wagner, Nola Weiss, and Ted, as well as several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Margit Weiss, brothers Bob (Linda), Tim, parents-n-law Bill and Leontina Kaiser, his grandparents, numerous aunts and uncles, and his beloved Bernadette.
The family would like to give special thanks and appreciation to the wonderful staff of Miller Pointe that also helped to care for Dave during the past several months.
