Margaret D. Lafontaine, 87, Minot, formerly of Berthold, died Monday, January 22, 2024 in a Minot Hospital.
Margaret was born August 7, 1936 on the family farm in Shelly Township of Ward County, the daughter of Arthur and Helga (Trondson) Ulberg. She was raised on the family farm and educated at country schools in that area. She went to high school in Berthold.
Margaret was united in marriage to David Lafontaine on March 7, 1953 at Zion Lutheran Church in Berthold. They made their home in Minot, where they raised their six children. She was a loving mother, homemaker and also worked part time as a waitress at Ellisons, Larry’s Café and North Hill Bowl. She worked for the Minot Public Schools as a “lunch lady” at North Hill Elementary where her smile and kindness were welcomed. After retirement, she took on her second career as an avid volunteer. She dedicated herself to serving others. She volunteered for years at First Lutheran, Trinity Hospital, local food banks, the Moose Lodge and always made time to “ring the bell” for the Salvation Army. They loved camping, traveling and could always be counted on to help family, neighbors and friends.
She always had her arms open for a hug and was the most loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Her beloved husband, David died December 9, 2006.
Margaret was a longtime member of First Lutheran Church in Minot, where she served at many church dinners and funeral services. She was active in ladies circle groups, made more pies for the church fair stand than could ever be counted and loved helping with the Hostfest too. She was a friend to all she met.
Margaret loved to bowl, throw darts, play bingo, and the door was always open at 810 Arbor for a visit. Her annual Margaretaville celebration with her family every August is a 37-year-old tradition that has become a family legend. She wore her title as “Mayor” with great flare!
We would like to acknowledge the many wonderful caregivers who blessed our Mom during her final journey. She brought her cheerful spirit and kindness to every circumstance and everyone who cared for her commented on that. “To the world you are a Mother, but to your family you are the WORLD.”
Margaret’s loving family includes, children: Dana (Warren) Ekblad, Maple Valley, WA; Debra (Roger) Glick, Minot, Daniel Lafontaine, Plymouth, MN, Don (Jennifer) Lafontaine, Minot and Dean (Michelle Racine) Lafontaine, Minot; 15 grandchildren to include: Amanda Smitkin, Sean Ekblad, Medora Ekblad, Jason Glick, Jared Glick, Jordan Glick, Margo Lemberger, Matthew Lafontaine, Marisa Lafontaine, Jamie Apffel, Justin Lafontaine, Brent Lafontaine, James Lafontaine, Brigitte Lafontaine, Phillip Lafontaine & 25 great grandchildren: Sabrina, Melody, & Andrew Smitkin; Kellen & Elsie Ekblad; Asherah, June, Margorie, Riley, Jacob, Julia, Penelope, & Lucas Glick, Hazel & Eloise Lemberger; Nicholas, Christian, Hunter, Brady, Jase & Tristan Apffel; Price, Penny & Paisley Lafontaine; Evelyn Lafontaine; and 2 step great grandchildren; Lily & Bill Egan; siblings, Gordon Ulberg, Berthold, Harlan Ulberg, Minot, Patricia Berg (Arnold), Berthold, Jerry Ulberg (Natalie), Lake Havasu, AZ, Greg Ulberg (Renee), Mandan, Rodney Ulberg (Jackie), Bismarck; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 53 years, David; son, Douglas and great granddaughter, Paisley.

Interment: Wildrose Cemetery, Berthold later in the Spring of 2024.
Visitation: Sunday, January 28th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
