Jeannine Romine, 92, Maxbass died on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at the Good Samaritan Home in Bottineau, ND.
Jeannine Adella was born on January 9, 1931 in Maxbass, ND to Leslie and Adella (Gunderson) Romine. She was raised on a farm near Maxbass, graduated from Maxbass High School and from the University of North Dakota in Grand Forks. Jeannine was an intelligent and interesting person. She was challenged with mental illness most of her adult life. She did her best to manage her illness, but sometimes her illness caused behaviors which caused strains in some relationships. She used her determination to live her life as a single, independent, woman. She was a rare survivor of pancreatic cancer, traveling by herself to the Mayo Clinic for surgery.
Jeannine was once married to Marvin Johnson, and they were the parents of two sons: Sherman and Sidney. They made their home in Maxbass and Jeannine was a music teacher and homemaker.
Most recently Jeannine had resided at the Good Samaritan Home in Mohall and Bottineau. Previously Jeannine resided at the Wellington Assisted Living for several years. Fiercely independent, she returned to Maxbass to live in her home. Jeannine received help from her neighbors to care for her lawn and assist with errands. When the state of North Dakota revoked her driver’s license, she used determination and grit to learn to use a computer to take the written test, hired a driving instructor to practice, and passed the test to regain her driver’s license.
Jeannine was a member of the English Lutheran Church in Maxbass and enjoyed attending Minot Christian Women lunches when she resided in Minot.
Jeannine is survived by her daughter-in-law: Clara Johnson; grandsons: Brent, Shane (Kara) and Derek Johnson; great grandsons: Carter and Easton; brother: Larry (Myrna) Romine; cousin: Carol Wenberg and special friends: Carol Larson, Pam Andrist and Duane Anderson. Jeannine created her own little village of support. She found a great friend in Dr. Charles Swenson, and his staff, who helped her manage her health care. Pringle & Herigstad law firm was also a place of refuge for her. She stopped in regularly and the staff treated her with friendship and respect. Pam Andrist, and also Wendy Keller, helped her navigate her financial life. Duane Anderson was a good friend and helped take care of her home. Jeannine was grateful for the help and kindness shown to her by her little village which allowed her to maintain her independence. She never imagined she would live in a nursing home, but following a fall and broken hip, that was her reality for the last year and a half of her life. To her surprise, she found compassion and care from all the staff. She enjoyed having her meals prepared for her, and all of her needs met. She was quite content.
Jeannine was preceded in death by her parents and sons: Sherman and Sidney Johnson. Jeannine was a devoted daughter and mother. The loss of her sons was felt deeply. Jeannine was proud of her grandsons and great grandsons.
Funeral Service: Friday, January 5, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens – Minot.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
