Terry Lynn Narum was born on July 31, 1950 to Melvin and Thelma (Ebel) Narum in Minot. He was reared on the family farm, rural Douglas and attended Douglas schools. In 1968 he graduated from Garrison High School. Terry attended the University of North Dakota, Grand Forks and graduated in 1972 with a BS degree in Business Management. On December 10, 1972 he married Jeanne Louise Cochran in Grand Forks.
Terry was employed by Tempo Stores in Minot from 1972-1977 as Merchandise Manager. From 1978 until 1995 he was employed by Dakco Distributors, Minot, holding positions as Marine Manager and Transportation Manager for Northland Sports, General Manager for Nodak Candy and Tobacco, and Personnel Manager of Dakco Distributors. Terry also farmed near Douglas, ND. In partnership he established Midwest Business Consulting in 1996 and later SecurScreen where he served as vice president and president respectively from then until 2011. He truly exemplified the North Dakota work ethic in all of the businesses he served.
Terry was an active member of the Minot Curling Club from 1975-1985, serving on the Board of Directors from 1979-1982. Active in township politics and rural fire protection, he was a volunteer fireman for the Minot Rural Fire Department from 1977-1984.
Active in the human resource field, Terry was a member of the Minot Human Resources Association, North Dakota Human Resource Association, and the national SHRM for over ten years. He was honored as the 1997 recipient of the Superior Merit Award and the 1998 recipient of the Professional Excellence Award by both the local and state chapters. Terry was State Council Director for the North Dakota Human Resource Association in 1999.
Terry had been a member of the Minot Lions Club since the 1980s serving as its treasurer from 1993-1999. Both in 1997 and 2011 he was declared a Melvin Jones Fellow and Lion of the Year in 2003. The International Lions Youth Outreach Award was presented to him in 1998 and he received the International President’s Award for Service Recognition in both 2006 and 2008. Lions Club fundraisers were always special projects for Terry and he volunteered many hours toward those pursuits. Used eyeglasses were stacked in boxes all over his house for years as he coordinated Lions members in the processing of these glasses to be shipped to third world countries for distribution to those in need. He attained his goal of processing 635,000 pairs of eyeglasses in 2009 (one pair for every citizen in North Dakota). At the time of his retirement, he had processed over a MILLION pairs of eyeglasses in his garage. Terry was able to deliver eyeglasses on a mission trip to Brazil in 2010. In June 2009 Terry was awarded the Robert John LePage Service Award by the North Dakota Association for the Blind for his dedication to the needs of the blind and visually impaired in North Dakota.
The concept of Investment Clubs caught Terry’s attention in the mid-1970’s and he helped establish four clubs, Dakota Bulls, DART I and II, and TIS serving as president and records manager for many years.
Serving as leader of Gasman (Ward Co) 4-H club for 15 years, he enjoyed teaching 4-H principles. The Friend of 4-H award 2005 was presented to him by the Ward County 4-H Council.
Terry was a member of Saron Lutheran Church, rural Minot where he served as President of the congregation from 1986-1987. He was a former member of Vincent Methodist Church and current member of First United Methodist Church in Zephyrhills, FL at the time of his death.
UND Sioux hockey was Terry’s passion and he always cheered them on, win or lose. His once in a lifetime experience came in April 2016 when he saw his beloved Sioux (Fighting Hawks) hockey team win the National Championship in Tampa, FL. Whether gardening, farming, repairing or building something new, Terry enjoyed challenging projects and tackled them with all the strength he had. He had lived in Zephyrhills, FL in retirement.
