LaVon Grubb, 93, Minot, formerly of Powers Lake, ND died Saturday, October 14, 2023 in her home.

LaVon was born March 5, 1930, in Powers Lake to Odin and Lottie (Lund) Nelson. As a child taught piano lessons and wrote Bible curriculum because she was a natural teacher. LaVon read the Bible in Norwegian to the Lund and Nelson grandparents, only realizing later she spoke two Norwegian dialects. LaVon graduated from Powers Lake High School in 1948 and began her college education at Bethel College in St. Paul, MN.

LaVon was joined in marriage to Normen Grubb on June 18, 1950 in Powers Lake. From 1950 to 1958, she attended Vanguard University in California. LaVon and Normen lived between Powers Lake and California to continue farming and attending college. She graduated Valedictorian of her class, while pregnant with her fourth child. The couple had a great desire to be overseas missionaries and LaVon planned to use her education degree to teach her children in the mission field. God clearly closed the doors to moving to another country, so they moved their family back to Powers Lake.

In 1976, they moved to Minot and in 1978 she had the surprise of giving birth to their fifth child at the age of 50. She always encouraged mothers to have another baby at 50, to keep you young. She was an excellent tour planner and took her children to all 50 states and other countries. LaVon taught Stonecroft Bible Studies, Christian Women’s Club, piano lessons and Sunday school, starting from childhood and into her 80’s. She supported her husband as his office administrator for many years. LaVon was the pianist in church beginning at the age of 13. She was a generous person and had an expansive ministry of letter writing that ministered to people across the world coming from her heart for world missions. The door of her home was always open and to the end of her life people felt welcome at her table.

Normen passed away on March 12, 2000.

LaVon is survived by her children Donelda Grubb, Turkey, Zona Grubb, Minot, Stanton (Diane) Grubb, Berthold and Natalie (Kris) Cheek, North Platte, NE; grandchildren David Grubb, Anne Bolling, Samantha (Jordan Koczot) Connour, Lee Grubb, Ean Grubb, Taylor Cheek, Jocelyn Cheek and Kristyn Cheek; great-grandchildren Elia Yon, Lucianna Yon, Gia Yon, Nico Bolling, Blinn Connour and Oz Connour.

LaVon was preceded in death by her parents, husband Normen, son Nolan and a great-grandson Jonathan Grubb and grandson-in-law Greg Connour.
