Wayne Franklin Dettmann, 88 passed away on August 30, 2023.  A memorial service will be held on Monday, October 9 at 11:00 am at Good Shepherd

Lutheran Church in Bismarck, ND.

Wayne was born on January 13, 1935 to Walter and Mildred (Wendt) Dettmann in Judson, ND. In 1947, the family moved to Elgin, ND where Wayne graduated from high school in 1952. Wayne and Bernice (Roth) were married in 1953 at Elgin.

Wayne continued his education at Dickinson State College. While attending college he enjoyed playing saxophone for Bob Brackel’s Moonlight Serenaders Orchestra. Wayne graduated from college in 1956 with a degree in Education. He started his teaching career at Noonan, ND and later at Turtle Lake, ND teaching music and history. Wayne spent several summers at the University of Montana pursuing a masters degree in education administration. He then served as the school superintendent at Streeter, ND for 2 years. Wayne and his family returned to Elgin and he held an administrative position at the school for 23 years.

After his wife Bernice passed away in 1990, Wayne retired from teaching. He moved to Jamestown, ND and managed a gas station for 2 ½ years.

After Wayne’s 2nd retirement, he decided to enjoy life and spend his winters in Mesa, AZ golfing. While in Arizona he met his special friend Lee Evans. They spent several years living between Mesa and Coralville, IA. While in Iowa he became an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. Wayne moved back to Bismarck to be close to his family in 2016.

Wayne will be deeply missed by his children: Brad (LeAnn) Spokane WA, Kay (Bob) Woeste, Bismarck ND, and Ross (friend Jody) Bismarck ND; his grandchildren: Heather Reis, Shane (Kelly) Dettmann, Tyler (Valerie) Woeste, Lindsey Dettmann, Samantha (Dusty) Mattson, and Kayla (Eric) Ahnen; Great-grandchildren: Erin (Nate) Dennis, Stephen (Judy) Reis; Zion, Isabella, and Max Dettmann; Lauren, Makenna, and Kate Woeste; Bailey, Jacob, and Lucas Mattson; sister in laws: Jackie Seibel, Kim Heidelman, and Veryl Roth.

Wayne was preceded in death by his wife Bernice; daughter, Lisa; his parents; and several brothers and sisters-in-law; and mother and father-in-law, Ben and Freda Roth.
