Arnold Johnson, 98, Garrison, died on September 4, 2023, at his home in Garrison.
A family graveside service was held.
Arnold Johnson was born April 19, 1925, on his mother’s homestead in Tobacco Garden Township in McKenzie County to Andrew and Judy (Fredrickson) Torgusen. His mother immigrated to the United States from Sweden. Arnold was the fifth of six children and was orphaned at the age of three due to his parents deaths, resulting in him and his siblings being split up. Charlie Johnson, an uncle, raised and adopted him. When Arnold was 16, a neighbor leased him two quarters of land on crop share and sold him a tractor and this started his farming career. In 1948 he married Betty Rothenberger and they had six children, three girls and three boys. In 1950, Arnold bought his own farm and “spent the next 50 years in the dust”. Arnold never turned down a game of horseshoes pool or cards.
Arnold is survived by his children, James A. (Mary) Johnson (Narol, Manitoba), Jean (Terry) Kolden (Roseglen, ND), and Andrew Johnson (Oklahoma City, Ok); 14 grandchildren; and 26 great grandchildren. He was predeceased in death by all five of his siblings as well as three children: Benjamin Johnson, Judith Weiskopf, and Janet Wherley.
