Surrounded and blessed with prayers, Anna Mae Grosz, 93, entered eternal life on Tuesday, August 29, 2023, at Missouri Slope Care Center, Bismarck. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 2 at St. Anne’s Catholic Church with celebrant Fr. Russell Kovash. A visitation will be held on Friday, September 1 from 6:00 – 7:00 pm at Bismarck Funeral Home, with a Rosary and vigil service beginning at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be held at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan on Tuesday, September 5 at 9:00 am.
Ann was born December 21, 1929, in a sod house on a ranch north of Scobey, MT to Nicholas and Martha (Yaroslowski) Chornuk. She developed her love for the outdoors as a young child, spending time in open country helping on the ranch. While herding sheep, she wrote a song that was recorded. She was invited to visit Los Angeles for the debut. After graduating high school in 1949, she worked as a teller at the bank in Scobey, MT until moving to Bismarck where she worked at First National Bank.
She met Matt Grosz through her sister, Nellie, and his brother Steve. They were married at St. Demetrius Catholic Church, Fairfield, ND on August 18, 1962. After traveling through western Montana and the West Coast, they made their home in Dickinson where they raised their two sons, Daniel and Michael. Ann had a love for work and helping others; rarely did she sit still. She instilled this work ethic in her boys.
Besides her family she had two passions, working outside and prayer. Working outside in her garden and taking care of the yard and then canning the fruit of her work took most of her time. Her favorite was canning peaches. The second passion was being a Prayer Warrior. Her favorite devotions were to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and praying the rosary. All around her house you could find pictures of the Sacred Heart, and she would leave them at places she visited. She created her own prayer book that was worn out through constant use. She spent her time watching Mass three times a day and prayed multiple rosaries for the intentions and protection of others. She offered Mass on a regular basis for those she loved and those who have gone before her.
Mom will be greatly missed because of her example of faithfulness in the Lord, persistence in prayer, and her consistent requests for chocolate milk and fudge striped cookies.
Ann is survived by her son, Daniel (Hope) Dickinson, and grandson Chris (Melissa), great grandchildren Kaylee, James, and Jesse; her son, Michael (Karen), Bismarck, and grandsons Zachary and Joshua (fiancée Kamryn Brecht); her sister, Nellie Grosz, Cody, WI; her sisters-in-law, Shirley Grosz, Bismarck, Linda Chornuk, Watford City, and Emma Dennis, Beaverton, OR
She was preceded in death by her husband, Matt (2000); parents; and siblings: Andrew Chornuk, Mary Ann Kowcun, Ivan Chornuk, Pauline Haverluk, and Harry Chornuk.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that a Mass be offered for Ann or a memorial be given to Missouri Slope Care Center, Heavens Helpers Soup Cafe, or a charity of the donor’s choice in Ann’s name.
