Geneil Evanchenko, 94, Minot and longtime Makoti area farmer, passed away peacefully Wednesday, August 23, 2023, in Minot.
Geneil was born November 23, 1928, in Minot, ND to Gust and Dora (Masuk) Evanchenko. He grew up on a farm located in Linton Township near Makoti and like most of his era, attended township school and helped on the farm during his youth. He graduated from Makoti High School in 1945, at the age of 16.
Geneil married Betty Hovda on November 10, 1953 in Makoti. They made their home on the family farm where they spent the next 5 decades raising durum wheat, various small grains and producing certified seed. Their union was blessed with a son, Jay and two daughters, Sally and Lynette.
Geneil was active in his community by serving on the Makoti and North Shore School Boards for 23 years in addition to the Linton Township board for over 40 years. He was a devout member of Our Redeemer’s Lutheran Brethren Church in Minot.
Geneil’s hobbies were all rooted in farming. He enjoyed attending ag meetings and was a member of several farming-related boards. As well as being a good farmer and mentor, he will be remembered for being a great husband, father, grandpa, and neighbor.
Geneil is survived by his loving wife of nearly 70 years, Betty, Minot; daughters Sally (Robert) Ludeman, Quincy, WA and Lynette Evanchenko, Minot; grandchildren Austin Ludeman and Brett Ludeman; sister Shirley Zieman, Olympia, WA along with numerous nieces and nephews.
Geneil was preceded in death by son Jay Evanchenko, sister and brother-in-law Joyce and Elmer Hansen and brother-in-law Lyle Zieman.
Celebration of Geneil’s Life: 1:00 p.m. Monday, August 28, 2023 at Our Redeemer’s Church, Minot.
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation: Sunday, August 27, 2023 from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Our Redeemer’s Church in lieu of flowers and plants.
