Janice (Jan) Jean Baumann, 68, of Bismarck, passed away at her home July 14, 2023 surrounded by family after a brief, but courageous battle with multiple myeloma cancer. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am July 21st, 2023 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bismarck, ND. Visitation will be held Thursday July 20th from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at Trinity Lutheran Church with a brief prayer service at 7:00 pm.
Jan was born on February 9, 1955 to Ernest and Delores (Kaelberer) Kinnischtzke. She grew up on a farm near Glen Ullin, ND with her 3 siblings, Janel, Russell and Rodney.
Growing up, Jan spent her time helping on the family farm and graduated high school in 1973. She attended Dickinson State University where, among other things, successfully competed on the women’s track and field team. She also met the love of her life, Robert Baumann while at the university. She graduated from DSU in 1977 with a double major in business and physical education.
Bob and Jan were married June 2, 1978 in Glen Ullin, ND. After their wedding, they spent the summer working in Medora, then returned to Regent, ND where Jan taught for one more year.
In the Fall of 1979 they moved to Max, ND where she taught for three years, then was employed at Bremer Bank. During that time, they were blessed with two amazing children. Emily Jean, born Aug. 1, 1982 and Andrew Joseph, born Oct. 24, 1986.
Jan was always very active in her community. While in Max, she was a Brownie Leader for the Girl Scouts, a member of Women of Today and awarded the “Key Woman” award. She also served on the Max Community Library Board, was a Sunday school leader at Our Savior Lutheran Church and also loved playing softball and attending many athletic events at Max High School.
In 1991, the family moved to Bottineau, ND, where they spent 20 years living, loving, and being a part of a wonderful community. Jan was employed by the Bottineau Public School District as an aide for a year. Following that, she spent 19 years at First National Bank & Trust. She was a favorite teller of many of the customers. During their time in Bottineau, Jan was actively involved in many community events and activities. She was a member of First Lutheran Church where she was very active with the worship team. She was part of the Bottineau Women’s Community Choir, president of the Band Parents, active in Hoopsters Youth Basketball and was a phenomenal chaperone. She was also very active in Bottineau Community Theater, performing on stage, providing costumes and doing set work for numerous community theater productions. Jan loved supporting her children in their passions and never missed a game, concert, competition, performance, or any other opportunity to support and encourage them.
In 2011, Bob and Jan moved to Bismarck, ND where Jan worked at Starion Bank until her retirement in February, 2020. Jan was loved by her coworkers and her customers! She was also an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church where she helped plan and lead worship.
After her retirement, she spent much time sewing quilts for family members and loved ones, growing a vegetable garden and beautiful flowers, going camping and going for motorcycle rides. She was a loving wife and mother, thoughtful sister, caring daughter, and sincere friend.
Jan is survived by her devoted and loving husband of 45 years, her three siblings, Janel (Gary) Opp, Russell (Beverly) Kinnischtzke, and Rodney Kinnischtzke; her children, daughter Emily (Pete) Cumings and Andrew (Alicia) Baumann; two grandchildren, Fiona and Ivy Cumings, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Jan was preceded in death by her loving parents, Ernest & Delores.
Memorials can be gifted in Jan’s name to Trinity Lutheran Church Music and Worship.
