Terry Dale Metz, 67, was called to heaven on May 23, 2023, with his loving wife Maggie by his side after losing a courageous two-year battle against cancer.
The world has lost a great husband, “dad”, “papa”, son, brother, uncle, and friend.
Terry was born in Garrison, ND on June 26, 1955, to Curtis and Ramona (Jungling) Metz. At an early age Terry became “the man of the house” and was a role model for his three siblings, Kathy, Brenda, and Steve, following the death of their father in 1962. Ramona was later united in Marriage to Herbert Mautz. From this union, they had two sons, Randy and Danny, completing the Metz/Mautz family.
Terry was raised on a farm east of Garrison. He learned how to turn wrenches when he was just five years old by working alongside his father Curtis at Eslinger Motors. Terry attended school in Garrison, graduating from Garrison High School in 1973. While in high school, Terry enjoyed working on the farm, riding horse, and competing in horse rodeo events. He then went on to become a diesel mechanic at Williston State College. During high school and college, Terry worked for Don Huettl at Huettl Brothers Implement in Garrison.
After college Terry returned to Garrison and continued to work full-time for Don Huettl. Terry worked at Huettl Brothers Implements and continued to do so over the years and through many ownership and name changes.
On April 13, 1984, Terry married the love of his life Margaret Pound. With Terry and Maggie’s union, Terry became a bonus dad to Maggie’s four daughters, Michele, Melinda, Melissa, and Melanie. Terry loved all of Maggie’s daughters like his own, even if they caused him to have a lot of grey hair. In 1991, Terry and Maggie became grandparents for the first time, and since then he has become “Papa” to a total of ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, whom he loved so very much.
Terry continued to spend a large portion of his time at the family farm tending to his bison. Terry and Maggie, alongside Duane and Julie Hummel, purchased Huettl Equipment in 2009, creating Lakeside Machinery. Terry continued to turn many wrenches until his retirement. After retirement, Terry and Maggie enjoyed spending time together. They enjoyed spending time outside, renovating their home, and traveling. Every time Terry and Maggie decided to take a trip, they flipped a coin at the 6-mile corner to determine if they were going North or South. One of their favorite vacation places was Branson, Missouri.
Terry wore his heart on his sleeve and was willing to help anyone that needed it. He will be deeply missed by his wife, children, grandchildren, family, and friends.
Terry is survived by his wife of 39 years, Maggie; daughters, Michele (Torrey) Seidler, Melinda (Samuel) Peterson, Melissa (Corey) Lauer, and Melanie (Ward) Heinzen; grandchildren, Megan (Ethan) Bender, Justin, Alyssa (Matt), and Tucker Seidler, Zachary Goldade, Hunter and Hayden Lauer, Abigail, Nicholas, and Nolan Heinzen; great-grandchildren, McKinley and Maisey Bender; mother, Ramona Mautz; siblings, Kathy (Rick) Jerome, Brenda (Steve) Huston, Steve (Terri) Metz, Randy (Darla) Mautz, and Danny (Cindy) Mautz; brother-in-law, Donnie (Debbie) Pound; aunt, Delores Luedke; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Terry is preceded in death by his father, Curtis Metz; in-laws, Ralph and Elsie Pound; grandson, Jordan Goldade; grandparents, John and Martha Jungling and Otto and Lydia Metz; nephew, Nicholas Pound; and niece, Becky Huston.
