Joseph “Joe” L. Brown of Berthold, ND, died Sunday, May 14, 2023 in a Minot hospital.
Joe, son of Joseph Sr. and Carolyn (Rogneby) Brown, was born March 24, 1955 in Minot, North Dakota. He was raised and educated in Berthold, where he was active in football, basketball, and track. He lettered all four years of high school in each sport, was honored as first team all-district in basketball, and held the school record for shot put for several years.
At the early age of 10, he began working at Brown Family Construction, running the dozer, push cat, and scraper. There is not a piece of construction equipment that he couldn’t operate. Later, he and Joseph Sr. did custom combining for farmers in the Berthold area. In their free time, Joe and his brothers helped their dad work on his race car to prepare for his weekend races at NoDak Speedway. He continued in the construction industry, working with Bechtold Excavating, Blattner Construction, Gratech, and most recently, Farden Construction as a Superintendent.
On February 7, 1997, Joe was united in marriage to Nancy Torres, and they made their home together in Berthold.
Joe was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Berthold, IUOE Local 49ers Union, and a former member of the Eagles of Cody, WY. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, loved spending time with his grandchildren, and watching NASCAR racing, especially Kyle Busch #18.
Joe’s loving family includes: his wife, Nancy of Berthold; children, Jerrica (Richard) Sauer of Bismarck, Amber (Robert) Mann of Cibel, TX, and Warren (Sonja Schumacher) Brown of Strasburg, ND; step-son Gene Sanders of Pensacola; grand-children, Matthew, Mikayla, Jolee, Peyton, Leo, and Jase; step-grandchildren Javier and Joey; siblings, Jeff (Jill) Brown of Berthold, Jackie (Randy) Clark of Maxbass, Jerry (Kim) Brown of Lansford, Jay (Julie) Brown of Berthold, John (Candace) Brown of Ross, Jim (Terri) Brown of Berthold, Jennifer (Tom) Hanson of Berthold, Jordan (Mindi) Brown of Berthold; sister-in-law, Jolene (Tony) Wampler of Carson City, NV; along with a number of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents.
Mass of Christian Burial: Monday, May 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Berthold.
Interment: Wildrose Cemetery, Berthold
Visitation: Sunday, May 21, 2023 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a Vigil Prayer Service at 7:00 p.m. all in Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
