Edwin J. ‘Ed’ Volk, 80, Minot, formerly of Sawyer, ND died Tuesday, April 11, 2023, in his home.

Edwin was born July 25, 1942 to Mike and Margaret (Koble) Volk at the hospital in Harvey, ND. He was educated in the Anamoose and Orrin areas during his childhood.

Edwin was united in marriage to Marcella ‘Sallie’ Vetsch at St. Anthony’s Catholic Church in Selz, ND on December 30, 1966. They made their home in Sawyer and later Minot. They enjoyed traveling throughout the US, but Medora was a favorite destination. They enjoyed dancing, both sharing a love of polka music. Their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s activities filled their calendar, and they loved every single minute supporting them. To his great-grandchildren, he was affectionately known as ‘Opa’.

Ed spent his working years in the construction industry as a heavy equipment operator. He tallied many hours and many machines in his 60 or so years on the job with Feist Construction, Gravel Products, and Clean Harbors Environmental Services, serving often as construction supervisor. He retired at 66 for three weeks, then took a job with Denny Beeter at Quality Construction. He also balanced a part-time gig at Sundre Sand and Gravel working until the age of 78.

Ed was a member of St. John The Apostle Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and The Moose Lodge, all of Minot. He served on the Sawyer City Council and was a member of the Sawyer Lions and Senior Center. He was a two-time recipient of the Sawyer Lions Club ‘Lion Of The Year’ in 1993-94 and 2004-05. He also was awarded the Sawyer Citizen of the Year in 2008.

Edwin listened to old time music and classic country. His favorite song was “You Are My Sunshine” sung to him by his granddaughter Kyla. He enjoyed the outdoors spending time with his family camping, hunting, fishing snowmobiling and riding motorcycle until he was 79! He spent many hours hunting with his son Steven and grandson Arron, starting them both at the age of 5. Elk hunts set in Medora with his son and in Montana with his brother-in-law Rich are treasured memories along with many tall tales and laughs shared over the years.

Coffee with the gang at the truckstop, Friday morning breakfast with the Anderson’s and snow removal for everyone in Sawyer and Minot with his John Deere tractor were important parts of Ed’s day. He was quite the handyman, there wasn’t much he couldn’t fix. Woodworking also kept his talented hands busy.

Ed will be missed for his dry sense of humor, kindness, the good relationships with coworkers, and being the “Rock” for his family.

Surviving family includes his wife Marcella ‘Sallie’ Volk, children Steven (Lynae) Volk and Deb (James) Grandy; 6 grandchildren Arron Grandy and Kyla Grandy and Dustin Lee, Dallas Lee, Lane Lee, Carly (Lee) LaBere; 5 great-grandchildren Kobie Lee, Veda Lee, Laken LaBere, Ava LaBere and Crew LaBere; siblings Albert (Billie) Volk, Minot, Marcella ‘Marcy’ Scherr, Minot, Ray (Twylah) Volk, Chaska, MN, Kenny (Mary) Volk, Alexandria, MN and Gerald (Barb) Volk, Minot, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
