Ellen Josephine Gregory

Ellen Josephine Gregory, 97, Dickinson, died on Friday, March 17, 2023 at St. Benedict’s Health Center, Dickinson. Josephine’s Parastas will be at 11 a.m., Monday, March 27, 2023 at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church, Fairfield with Fr. Martin Nagy as celebrant. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Fairfield. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with a Rosary and Panakhyda at 5 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the Parastas at the church.

Ellen Josephine Gregory was born in Gorham on July 8, 1925 to Alex and Mary (Grosulak) Palahniuk. She attended Black Butte Country School which was northwest of Fairfield, graduating from Belfield High School in 1943. Josephine attended Dickinson State Teachers College to receive her Teaching Credentials and eventually received her Bachelor of Science Degree in Education from Dickinson State College. She taught for 40 years in Billings County Schools.

On February 23, 1946, Josephine married Nick Gregory at St. Demetrius Ukrainian Catholic Church. They farmed and ranched at the original Gregory homestead until she moved in to Dickinson. Josephine was involved in the Fairfield Community Club, pinochle clubs and a dominoes group. She was a trustee and choir member at St. Demeterius Church. Josephine enjoyed working at many events, sponsored by the Ukrainian Cultural Institute. She enjoyed visiting, reading, card playing, singing, cooking, gardening and canning.

Josephine’s Ukrainian heritage was very important to her. She made beautiful easter eggs and Ukrainian counted cross stich and pottery. During the holidays she took great pride making traditional Ukrainian foods. She was very good at baking yeast breads and rolls, like Easter Baba bread and Kolachi. In 1996, Josephine went on a tour to Ukrainian where she connected with her family and her heritage.

Josephine is survived by her three children, Lawrence (Beverly), Redmond, WA, Germaine Ueckert, Beach, and Leroy (Marlene); three grandsons, Chad (Cheryl), Chris (Sharon), and Zachary; two step-grandsons, Bill (Tina) Ueckert and Patrick (Dawn) Ueckert; two great-granddaughter; and five step-great-grandchildren; siblings, Ann Palahniuk, Eugenia Haag, Bernard (Judy) Palahniuk, and Bernadette (Alvin) Ohlhauser; sister-in-law, Shirley; and brother-in-law, Tony (Helen) Gregory.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; brothers, James, Steve and David; son-in-law, Willie; brothers-in-law, Nute, Joe and John; and sisters-in-law, Mary, Lena, Ann, Jenny, Olga, and Betty.
