George Fick

George Fick, 90, Loon Lake/Vergas, MN and formerly of Burlington, ND died on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 in a Minot hospital with his loving family at his side.

George Wayne Fick was born on July 19, 1932 on the family farm in Dora Township of Otter Tail County near Dent, MN to Robert and Elsie (Eidahl) Fick.  He was raised on the farm for a short time then the family moved to Dent, MN to operate the family grocery store. He attended school in Perham and graduated from Perham High School in 1950.  He enlisted in the U.S. Army in February of 1953 and served stateside primarily at Fort Gordon near Augusta, Georgia during the Korean War.  Following his honorable discharge in February of 1955 he returned to Dent, MN before moving to Minot, ND. 

George married Mary Anna “Skip” Redmond on November 28, 1957 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Augusta, GA.  They made their home in Minot for a short time before moving to Burlington and then to a farm in Kirkelie Township of Ward County in 1973. During their time together, George and Skip made many trips to Georgia to see her family.  George figured there were 17 meetings with the southern family over a 40-year span.  They traveled to many states in the southeast, southwest, west and northwest. George was employed as a lineman for many years by Northern States Power Company.  He retired from N.S.P. in 1987 as a draftsman.  George and Skip retired to Loon Lake, MN in 1999.  Skip died on October 22, 2014 and George continued to reside there until October of 2022 when he moved to Somerset Court Assisted Living Center – Minot to be closer to his children and their families.

George was formerly a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church – Minot where he held almost every possible position including Elder and Treasurer.  Currently, he was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, at Loon Lake/Vergas, MN.  He was a former member of the Minot American Legion Post #26, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #753 and the Dent, MN Legion Post #148.  George enjoyed collecting numerous things, but especially 2-cylinder John Deere Tractors as well as winemaking, ice fishing, hunting, auction sales and growing tomatoes.

George’s loving family includes:  Jeanine “Buttons” (Darren) Kabanuk of Burlington, ND – Rebecca (Shawn) Taylor, Collin Abernathey, Gwendolyn Taylor of Minot, Aaron Kabanuk of Fargo, Derek Kabanuk of Burlington, Bridgette and Jaydan Weltikol of Fargo; Sharon “Pete” (Tom) Neshem – Daniel (Tanna), Brekken and Danika Neshem, Andrea Neshem all of Minot; LaVonne “Bootsie” (Ron) Matthews of Fargo, ND; Derrill (Connie) Fick of Burlington – Stacey Fick, Isaac and Kohen Kuhnhenn, Amara Rosselli of Minot, Dustin (Wendy) Fick, Nathan Fick, Madisyn and Chayse Keller, Lauryn Wilson all of Fargo, Mikayla (Kory) Solberg, Raegan and Arthur Solberg of Minot; Jessica and Hendrix Belgarde of Minot; sister-in-law: Phyllis Fick of Loon Lake/Vergas MN and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

George was preceded in death by his parents, wife, siblings:  Jim (Blanche) Fick, Kay (Robert) Shields, Dorothy (John) Hertel, Robert Fick; in-laws: Bill Redmond, Anna Jo Redmond and Hazel Redmond; niece: Susan Redmond and nephew: Mike Shields.

Public Visitation: Sunday, March 19, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.
Funeral Service:  Wednesday March 22, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul’s Lutheran Church – Loon Lake, MN.
Interment will be in the church cemetery.
Arrangements in Minnesota are being cared for by the Furey Funeral Home in Frazee, MN.
Memorials are preferred to the Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church both of Minot and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of Loon Lake/Vergas MN.
