Shirley Hoelscher

Shirley Hoelscher, 91, Rural Berthold died on Saturday, March 18, 2023 in a Velva care center.

Shirley May Wherley was born on March 6, 1932 in Mohall, ND to Royal and Lila (Nelson) Wherley.  She was raised and educated in Minot and graduated from Minot High School in 1950.  As a young adult she was employed at B & L Food Market and Minot Drug.

Shirley married Ernest Hoelscher on March 15, 1953 in Minot.  They made their home and raised their children: Wayne, Sheree, Kenneth and Bruce on a farm near Berthold.  After her children were grown Shirley was employed at Jake’s Spice n’ Spirit as a baker for fourteen years.  She retired in 2003 and had continued to reside on the farm with Ernie.  Most recently, she had resided at Souris Valley Care Center for the past year where she received excellent care.

Shirley was a former member of Lynch Immanuel Lutheran Church prior to its closure and presently was a member of Peace Lutheran Church – Burlington.  She was a member of the 7th Cavalry – Minot, KW Mixettes Homemakers Club and Kirkelie Township Board for many years.  Also, she was secretary-treasurer of the Carpio Rural Fire District and a member of the Waterford Farmers Union.  Shirley especially enjoyed quilting, crocheting, crafts, cooking, gardening, plastic canvas art and crossword puzzles.

Shirley’s loving family includes her husband of 70 years Ernest; children:  Wayne (Candis) Hoelscher of Surrey, Sheree Mertz of Minot, Kenneth (Karla) Hoelscher of Oakes and Bruce Hoelscher of Berthold; eight grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one great great grandchild; in laws: Greg Davis of Washington and Anna (Al) Jundt of Minot and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, an infant son, grandson: Garrett Hoelscher and siblings: Wallace Wherley, Ronnie Wherley, Mary Lou (Henry) Lyght and Darlene Davis.

Celebration of the Life of Shirley Hoelscher: Thursday, March 23, 2023 at 11:00 a.m. in Peace Lutheran Church – Burlington.  To view a livestream of the service access https://www.mtmsales.net/thomas
Interment will be in the Veteran’s Section of Rosehill Memorial Park – Minot.
Visitation: Wednesday, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.
