Lois Peterson

Lois Peterson, 90, of Sawyer, died Monday, January 30, 2023 in a Minot hospital with her loving family by her side.

Lois Margaret Borreson was born February 26, 1932 in Minot, the first of two daughters born to Leonard and Margaret (Wang) Borreson. She was baptized and confirmed at Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva and graduated from Velva High School in 1951. While in high school she worked for J.C. Penney and after high school worked at the R.E.A. office. She was united in marriage to Freeman Peterson at Oak Valley Lutheran on December 29, 1952. After their marriage, they lived in Chandler, Arizona where Freeman was stationed while serving in the Air Force. They were later stationed at the Lockbourne Air Force Base in Ohio. After his discharge in December of 1954, they returned to North Dakota. Freeman was employed in Velva for a time before taking a job for the Sawyer Farmers Elevator in 1956. They were blessed with four children, Devra, Lisa, Kevin and Anita. Lois continued to make her home in Sawyer until her death. Freeman died January 17, 2010.

Lois looked forward to spending time with her family as well as quiet get-aways to parks with the camper. She felt honored when her family surprised her with a 90th birthday party. While Lois enjoyed being home, she was excited at the opportunity to visit Cancun with family members a few years ago. She played piano and the base drum in high school. She tended to her houseplants but looked forward to each spring, getting her greenhouse set up for planting.  During the summer she was in “her element” when she could be outside working with her flowers and garden, which she was still doing at the age of 90. She enjoyed the companionship of an abandoned cat named Mama, who provided her with many hours of entertainment.

Lois was a life-long member of Oak Valley Lutheran Church.

Lois was preceded in death by her husband, parents, as well as a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth Ann and Otto Boechler.

She is survived by son, Kevin Peterson, Velva; daughters Devra (John) Mogren, Minot; Lisa (Steve) Rokusek, New Leipzig; Anita (Porter) Dassenko, Belgrade, MT; Grandchildren; Eric (Dusti) Mogren, Karl (Jana) Mogren, Bridget and Natasha Dassenko; great grandchildren, Hunter & Kaidynce Mogren, step-great grandchildren, Ethan, Rylee and Kaleb Schimelfenig; brother-in-law Gerry & (Sherry) Whitted, sister-in-law Gail (Jeff) Buda; several cousins, nephews and nieces.
