Harry D. Hughes, 72, Minot, passed away Monday, January 30, 2023 in a Minot hospital.

Harry Dale Hughes was born on July 11, 1950 the son of Harry and Doris (Wilcox) Hughes in Minot, ND. At a young age, the family of 6 moved to a two room shack in the Keyes Addition at 911 Jefferson Drive in Minot. He attended and graduated from Minot High School in 1969.

As a young man he worked numerous jobs, including the Coca-Cola plant, Porter Brothers, Steen Construction, Gravel Products, and Westland Oil. He married Hazel Vandelicht on January 17, 1972. They made their home in Minot with their three boys: Troy, Todd, and JR.

As a young entrepreneur, he started H&H Insulation, The Scrapyard, and Hughes Trapping, but his true calling was in 1979 when he started H&H Trucking. He dabbled in anything he could to make an extra buck. In 2005, he went into partnership with his son, Troy, and started Mad Dog Brokerage. Harry continued to be involved with trucking until his death.

Years ago, he met Tina Olson and developed a friendship that over time blossomed into a marriage on October 30, 2021. Harry and Tina’s families were blended together. Harry loved watching his boys grow and start families of their own, but his greatest joy came when he was given the title of “Papa”. Harry’s hobbies included scrapping metals, riding motorcycle and his Slingshot, playing pinochle, card tricks, reading palms, trapping, fishing, making breakfast, classic car collecting, and most of all having his friends over to his house.

Harry was known for his quick witted responses, spending time at the VFW and Capri Bar, and always picking up a hitchhiker. He was known in the neighborhood as the “Candy Man” and to the local elevator workers as the “Pie Man”.

Survivors include his wife, Tina; three sons, Troy (Myranda) and their son Marcus; Todd (Sara) and their children Addyson and Ty; JR and his children Ava, Josie, and Zachary; stepchildren, Michael (Michelle) Harnist and their children Madison and Carson; and Abbey Olson; step-great-grandson, Kyle; sister Janet Olson; brother Wayne (Jean) Hughes; mother-in-law Sharon Engwis along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and in-laws; special friends Randy (Barb) Landphere and Greg (Diane) Bryantt and a host of friends.
