Harold Harmon, 89, Minot and formerly of Granville died on Tuesday, January 31, 2023 in a Garrison nursing home.
Harold Eugene was born on June 20, 1933 on a farm near Deering, ND to Porter and Stella (Simmons) Harmon. He was raised and educated in Granville and graduated from Granville High School in 1952. He enlisted into the U.S. Navy on August 1, 1952 and served aboard the USS Leary prior to his honorable discharge on July 17, 1956.
Harold married Shirley Hillerud on March 6, 1954 in Norfolk VA. They returned to North Dakota after his discharge from the Navy and resided in Velva for three years where he was employed by the Velva Journal. The family moved to Granville for 20 years before relocating to Minot in 1979 when Harold began employment with the Minot Daily News as a press operator. He retired in 1997 after 37 years with the Minot Daily News. Retirement was short lived when Harold went to work part-time in the summers at Souris Valley Golf Course on the grounds maintenance crew for twenty years until August of 2017.
Harold was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren compete. He took many trips to the Twin Cities with his grandchildren sharing his love for the Minnesota Twins and Vikings. He especially enjoyed yardwork and gardening, woodworking and was meticulous about his vehicles. Harold and Shirley enjoyed traveling across the United States to the USS Leary Shipmate Reunions connecting with old friends and making new ones.
Harold was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church – Minot and a former member of First Lutheran Church – Granville and its church council. Also, he was a former member of the Granville School Board, and American Legion Post as well as the Moose Lodge and Elks Lodge both in Minot.
Harold’s loving family includes his wife of 68 years Shirley; son: Randy (Lisa) Harmon of Sun Prairie WI, four grandchildren: Reed (Anna) Harmon, Ross Harmon, Ryan (Kylene) Kraft, Shelley (Jeff) Overbo; five great grandchildren: Preston and Mason Kraft, Kinleigh and Braelynn Overbo, and Beau Harmon; sisters: Maxine Harmon and Joyce Harmon both of Portland and Jean Jones of Scottsdale AZ and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Harold was preceded in death by his parents, daughter: Roxann Kraft and siblings: Leland and Evelyn.

Celebration of the Life of Harold Harmon: Tuesday, February 7, 2023 at 10:30 a.m. in Bethany Lutheran Church – Minot.

Graveside Service: Tuesday at 3:00 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery – Mandan.
Visitation: Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.
Memorials are preferred to Granville American Legion, Bethany Lutheran Church or North Dakota Veteran’s Cemetery.
