Harold William “Satch” Krieg, 94, die-hard New York Yankees and Cleveland Brown’s fan joined his beloved wife, Nancy, in Heaven on Sunday, December 11, 2022. A joint funeral for Satch and Nancy will be held on June 23, 2023 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Dickinson with Pastor Lisa Lewton officiating.
Harold William Krieg was born October 25, 1928 to Robert and Christine (Fehr) Krieg in Hebron, North Dakota. He was raised in Hebron until the family moved to Dickinson in 1940. Satch earned his nickname because from Grade 4 on he carried a satchel with his basketball clothes, shoes, and ball with him. He lovedbasketball and avidly played during his high school and college years. Satch was inducted into the Blue Hawk Hall of Fame in 1985 because of his 1947-1952 basketball playing days at Dickinson State.
On September 28, 1952 Satch married Nancy Lee McBride at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Dickinson. After their marriage, the couple moved to Bozeman, Montana where Satch earned his degree in Civil Engineering in 1955. Satch took a job with the Northern Pacific Railroad as a civil engineer in Billings, Montana. In 1959, the couple moved back to Dickinson and bought Nancy’s family home. Satch started his career that year with the North Dakota State Highway Department in the Dickinson District. He retired from this position in 1996.
Satch served on the Dickinson Public School Board and the Dickinson Cemetery Association. He was a member of the Elks, Eagles, German Hungarian, and the St. Anthony Club. However, he was proudest of being an active worshipper at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church and an usher for 50 years. Satch’s five children saw by example what a deep faith their Dad had. He always said, “Only by the Grace of God do you have what you have.” The five Krieg kids have tried to live this daily.
Satch is survived by his children: Roberta (Myron) Duttenhefer, Mick (Cindy) Krieg, Janice (Greg) Pavlicek, Mort Krieg, and Pete (Tina) Krieg; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren with one due December 28, 2022; and his sister, Eleanora Fischer.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Nancy; son, Dean Scott; parents, Robert and Christine; and siblings, Florence, Albert and Evelyn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Altar Guild and the Dorcas Society of Dickinson.
