Evangeline “Angie” Guvakosky

Evangeline (Angie) Schoenberg Guvakosky, 91, of Minot formerly of Sherwood, ND passed away Tuesday, January 10, 2023 at Trinity Hospital, Minot.

Evangeline (Angie) Schoenberg Guvakosky was born to Louis and Louise (Jantz) Schoenberg on July 28, 1931 near Benedict, ND. The family relocated to Fairview, MT for a while and in 1941 purchased a farm in rural Mohall, ND. Angie attended grades 6 – 11 at Mohall School and graduated from Dakota Lutheran High School (Minot, ND) in May 1949. Angie attended Minot State Teachers College, graduating with an Elementary Education teaching degree in 1960. She taught in various rural schools including Van Buren and Eden Valley. She attended summer classes and later earned her master’s degree in Speech Therapy. She traveled to area Renville County schools providing speech therapy.

On July 29, 1951 William (Bill) Guvakosky and Evangeline Schoenberg were united in marriage at Zion Lutheran Church in Mohall, ND. They resided in Minot for a few years while Angie attended college. Bill was employed at Vitko Construction. In the fall of 1952, they purchased a farm in Eden Valley Township, Sherwood, ND and actively farmed. Bill and Angie were blessed with three daughters Sheila, Cryslynn and Dori. Angie enjoyed oil painting, (even selling some of her paintings), growing flowers and entering area Flower Shows.

Angie was a longtime Eden Valley Busy Bee’s 4-H club leader, Sunday School teacher and Church Council Member. She was an avid quilter, creating many beautiful quilts that she donated to the Metigoshe Ministry Quilt auctions and made for family members. She was a member of the Bread of Life Lutheran Church.

Bill passed away in 1988. Angie continued to stay on the farm and retired from teaching in 1992. At this time, she moved to Minot and did some private tutoring. Health concerns moved her into assisted living in 2012. She continued to reside at Elison Assisted Living until the time of her death. She will be greatly missed by her family & friends.

Angie is survived by her daughters Cryslynn (Dave) Walker of Garrison, ND, Dori Axness of Carpio, ND, sister, Berniece Skaufel of Minot, brothers, Vern (Verna) Schoenberg of Mohall, Lorance (Nellie) Schoenberg of Steilacoom, WA, and Rueben (Sandra) Schoenberg of Mohall. Grandchildren Ryan Walker of Hillsboro, ND, Ashley (Seth) Sparrow of La Harpe, IL, and Brady (Lindsey Kautzman) Beulah, ND. Great-grandchildren Kimber Walker, Beckett, Brinley, Bennett and Bridger Sparrow, Brantley Kautzman – Brady and Sloane Axness.

She is preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Guvakosky, daughter Sheila Guvakosky, great grandson Bryson Sparrow and parents Louis and Louise Schoenberg.

A graveside service will be planned for the spring, where she will be laid to rest at Sunset Memorial Gardens, next to her husband Bill.
