Ida Engel

November 6, 1928 – December 18, 2022

Ida Engel was called home to her Lord and Savior on Sunday December 18, 2022. She was born Ida Lora Sayler, daughter to Henry and Rosalia Sayler on November 6, 1928. She was age 94 at the time of her passing. Ida died of natural causes while at Sanford Medical Center in Bismarck with family members surrounding her bedside.

Ida lived in the McClean County area and the city of Garrison all her life. She was born and grew up on a farm in Platt Township, which is just south of Douglas, ND. Ida attended country school. As a child she worshipped with her family at the Congregational Church. She became a farmer’s wife marrying Leslie Engel, also of Garrison in April of 1948. They were married at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garrison, ND.  They farmed and lived in the country until 1953 when they moved into the town of Garrison. Ida and Les were married 65 plus years until the time of his passing nine years ago.  Leslie and her three children were the loves of her life. Ida dedicated her entire life in service to her husband, children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and to her God. She sacrificed much for her family, always putting them and others first.  Everyone remarked about her kind and gentle soul.  She was a long time active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Garrison.  Ida embraced the role of wife, mother and housekeeper; in which she excelled. She was an excellent cook, but with her usual humility would never claim to be a chef. She could sew, anything. But mostly she sewed patches and clothing repairs as her boys were active in their play and work; they very hard on clothing, especially jeans. She loved visiting with relatives and friends. Ida was a voracious reader, especially non-fiction.  Every night she sat at the kitchen table for hours studying biographies, history, Encyclopedias, family genealogy, the Bible —she didn’t just read these works, she studied them. Ida spent the summers gardening and taking care of the yard work in addition to supporting the men who worked in the fields.  She took great pride in her maintaining the yard, garden and the family home in general. The past few years her favorite thing to do was to join her group of friends for coffee every morning.

Ida is survived by her three children, Alan D. Engel, Bismarck, Daryl C. Engel, Garrison,

Wesley W. Engel, Rio Rancho NM, her grandchildren, Alana (Chris) Chaves-Engel of S. Dartmouth, MA, Dylan (Katie) Engel, Fargo, ND and three great grandchildren, Jace, Kamia, and Gabrielle.

Ida is preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Rosalia (Neuberger) Sayler, of Garrison, ND, her husband Leslie, of Garrison, ND, all her sisters, including: Lydia (Christ) Engel of Douglas, ND, Alma (Alec) Jungling, Garrison, ND, Lorraine (Malon) Webster, Layton UT, Katherine Sayler, Garrision, ND,  Martha (Richard) Bauer, Missoula, MT, and also, Eunice (Wilber) Hill, Roseglen, ND.  Additionally, all six of Ida’s brothers preceded her in death.
