Eugene “Gene” Wilhelm

Eugene “Gene” Wilhelm, 95, Dickinson, died on Friday, December 9, 2022 at home with family by his side. Per his wishes, private family services will be held.

Eugene “Gene” F. Wilhelm was born on September 10, 1927 in Glen Ullin, ND to Paul and Elizabeth (Gerger) Wilhelm. Both Paul and Elizabeth were born in Hungary. Gene graduated from Dickinson State College in 1954 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science and Physical Education.

He married Arlene Zimmerman on December 31, 1953. Gene and Arlene had three children, Beth, Genie, and Jay.

In 1949 Gene started the business which was originally called X-L Cleaners. In 1959 they started on their plans on a new brick building to house what was later known as Excel Cleaners. Gene and Arlene operated Excel Cleaners for over 50 years. They were know for their expertise in the fabricare industry both nationally and internationally.

His hobbies included some fishing and hunting. However, his favorite hobby was playing golf and helping to promote and run the golf course. When his hips wouldn’t allow him to play anymore, he kept his golf cart so he could go out, visit his friends, and “inspect” or keep an eye on new things going on out there. He was a veteran and a member of VFW, the Eagles, the German Hungarian Club and also a lifelong member of the Elks.

Gene is survived by his daughter, Beth; his son, Jay; his brother, James; six grandchildren, Kristopher, Justin, Heather, Jenae, Chase, and Samantha; great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Rocky; and daughter-in-law, Renee.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene; their beloved daughter, Genie; his brother, Paul; and beloved aunts and uncles.
