Luella Haugen, 97, Minot and formerly of Velva, died on Monday, October 24, 2022 in a Minot assisted living facility.

Luella Grace was born on December 6, 1924 in Aberdeen, SD to John and Elsie (Rice) Laffen.  She was raised and educated in Edgeley, ND, graduated from Edgeley High School in 1942 and received her Standard Teaching Certificate from Valley City State College.   As a young adult, she was employed as a teacher in Turtle Lake, ND where she met her future husband.

Luella married Milfred Haugen on March 23, 1946 in Edgeley.  They made their home in Minot until they moved to Velva in 1951 where they owned and operated the Star City Café.  They returned to Minot in 1958 where Luella was employed at Dakota Drug for thirty-seven years.  She retired in 1995.  Milfred died on November 5, 2000.  Luella had continued to reside in Minot most recently at Edgewood Vista.

Luella was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and its Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.  She was a Hostfest Volunteer as well as a playground supervisor at Perkett and Jefferson Elementary Schools in Minot and a lunchroom substitute at Erik Ramstad Junior High School in Minot.  Luella enjoyed playing cards especially pinochle, dancing and socializing with friends.

Luella’s loving family includes: her children:  Dianne Van Berkom of Minot, Darryl Haugen of Minot and Pastor Daniel (Cheryl) Haugen of Portland OR; grandchildren:  Michael, Brian, Kimberly, Erik, Alex and Emily; ten great grandchildren; brother-in-law: Dale Saville of Camp Wood, TX: several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Luella was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sons-in-law:  Harold Hulet, Douglas Van Berkom and siblings: Helen, Evelyn, Sandra, Lawrence, Donald and Leslie.

Funeral Service:  Tuesday, November 1, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. in St. Mark’s Lutheran Church – Minot. To view a livestream of the service access https://www.mtmsales.net/thomas
Interment will be in Rosehill Memorial Park – Minot.
Visitation: Monday, October 31 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in Thomas Family Funeral Home – Minot.
Memorials are preferred to St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or Samaritan’s Purse.
