Lorin was born June 3, 1979 in Dickinson to Leon and Lynda (Erickson) Rustand. When he was 8 months old, he had spinal meningitis which changed his life forever. He attended special education classes and graduated from Dickinson High School in 2000. His brother Lance along with his friends, embraced Lorin who would accompany them on many school lunch hours, car rides, and gatherings; all of which he enjoyed. He participated in Special Olympics for a number of years. He was proud to have his own apartment, where he had the support of staff to give him help and care. Lorin’s family is eternally grateful for the many years of aid from his support staff at Support Systems, Inc., Community Options, Inc. and Able, Inc.; many of whom became his friends. Through all his independent living, he always looked forward to coming home to Dad and Mom on the weekends. He was a collector of many things and multiples of them, but had a particular affinity for #2 pencils. In his younger years it was children’s books, and super bouncy balls. He was easy to please when hungry or thirsty with a simple cloverdale hotdog (6 at a time) and iced tea (unsweetened – no lemon!). Lorin’s cheery smile and trademark greeting “long time, no see” brought smiles to those around him, regardless of how well he knew you. He was always welcoming and ready to be with friends and family. We are grateful for all the things Lorin taught us and he will be missed immensely.

Lorin was preceded in death by his father, Leon with whom he had a special bond; his grandparents; his uncles, Maylan Keim and David Reopelle; aunt, Kathy Erickson; and cousin, David Rustand. He is survived by his mother, Lynda; brother and sister-in-law, Lance and Lacey along with many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Memorials may be given to Special Olympics of ND, or The Arc of Dickinson 653 19th St. W, Dickinson, ND 58601, or charity of your choice.
