Marcus Lee Dethloff, 43, Bismarck, passed away on September 2, 2022.
He was a loving husband, devoted father, and caring son and brother. He lives on through the lives of his two beautiful girls and his wife. A private celebration of life will be held on September 9, 2022.
He was born November 6, 1978 in Medina, ND. He started out his life living in Pettibone and then the family moved to Bismarck in 1983 and established the Dethloff farm. Marcus graduated from Century High School in 1997 and went on to attend Bismarck State College, followed by the University of North Dakota, receiving a degree in Electrical Engineering in 2013. He most recently worked at Basin Electric Power Cooperative.
Marcus was a clever child and advanced for his age, who loved to watch movies, play video games, skateboard, snowboard, and he proudly won the state BMX title. He loved to learn and used his skills with electronics, technology, art, playing guitar, car repairs, wheeling and dealing, house remodeling, and could fix anything. Marcus developed a passion for golf that he shared with many of his friends and enjoyed competing in golf leagues. He accomplished not only one, but two hole in ones.
Marcus was also known as “weasel” and there was a reason he was called that. Even at a young age, Marcus was known for his humor, wittiness, and being a rascal. There are many stories of him teasing, pushing his sister’s buttons, playing pranks, and he had the best one-liners. He could lighten up the mood when he was present and uplift others. We will miss his mischievous laughs, chuckles, quiet smirks, and his charming dimples.
Marcus first set eyes on Michelle sitting behind her in 8th grade and would twirl and twist her hair into knots. It wasn’t until the summer before their high school senior year, that Marcus made his first move. He drove up in the “Thunder Chicken” and joined Michelle roller blading along the river. From then on, Michelle was the most beautiful and important woman to him. Marcus and Michelle married on September 26, 2018 with an intimate ceremony at Lake Louise in Banff, Canada. They shared the deepest love for each other for 26 years.
On December 20, 2013 their daughter Katie, or Katie-bug, was born. Their second daughter, Elise, was born on December 27, 2018. Marcus was a proud and protective dad. He enjoyed reading books to them, snuggling, watching movies, playing cards, and telling stories. Marcus also shared and taught his hobbies of snowboarding, skateboarding, and BMX racing. Together, his kids and his wife were “his girls” and he would do anything for them. His daughters have and carry on his kind and tender heart.
Above all, Marcus loved his family more than anything. He is survived by his wife and the love of his life, Michelle (Feist) Dethloff; daughters, Katie (8) and Elise (3); parents, Bill Dethloff and Myrna Dethloff; sisters, Julie Dethloff and Lori Dethloff (Watson); father and mother in-law Robert and Anna Feist; sisters and brother-in law, Karla Kalanek (Bill), Laura Duty (Travis), and James Feist (Preeti); nieces and nephews Ava and Peyton Kalanek, Mariah and Derek Duty; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who love him.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Scott Dethloff; grandparents, Geraldine and Fred Dethloff, and Hank and Sarah Sommerfeld; brothers-in-law Kim Ozbun and Dan Duty.
In honor of Marcus’s life and caring nature, in lieu of flowers, you may donate to a local charity of your choice to benefit kids in need (backpack, school lunch, mentoring, food, clothing, sport programs, etc.).
