Obituary

Rose Elizabeth (Splonskowski) Riehl, 93, of Mandan, passed away September 1, 2022 at Miller Pointe, Mandan. 

Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, September 10, 2022 at St. Lawrence Catholic Church, Flasher, ND with Msgr. Thomas Richter as celebrant. Burial will follow the service at St. Lawrence Cemetery.  Visitation is on Friday, September 9, 2022 from 4:00-8:00 PM at Weigel Funeral Home, Mandan, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Saturday.

Rose was born on June 2, 1929 to Frank and Elizabeth (Kappenman) Splonskowski in Braddock, ND.  She attended Braddock Elementary School and St. Mary’s High School in Richardton, ND where she was introduced to the love of her life, Ted.  They were married on June 10, 1948, at a double wedding ceremony with her sister and brother-in-law, Anne and Clemens Huber, at Braddock, ND.  Ted and Rose made their home on a farm South of Raleigh where they raised their family of 9 girls and 6 boys.  They partnered with Ted’s brother Emil & his wife Irene to farm and raise their families together.  Ted and Rose retired to their home in Flasher in 1988 where they lived until moving to St. Gabriel’s Community Assisted Living in November 2017.  After Ted passed away on January 21, 2020, Rose moved to a nursing home where she resided at the time of her death.

She was active in the church and community organizations as well as her role on the farm.  She was a CCD teacher for many years at St. Gertrude’s and was a member of the Christian Mothers her whole married life.  Rose was a Farmer’s Union Youth leader for 15 years and a Eucharistic Minister at both St. Gertrude’s and St. Lawrence’s parishes. She and Ted were also members of the Catholic Order of Foresters, Lions Club, Historical Society, Flasher Commercial Club, and the Bismarck-Mandan Serra Club of ND.

Rose is survived by her fifteen children, Marie (Bob) Westlund of Hibbing, MN; Bob (Sue) Riehl of Billings, MT; Ed (Makayla) Riehl of Belgrade, MT; Pat (Amy) Riehl of Elliston, MT; Rosy (Vince) Gambale of Apex, NC; Ben (Teri) Riehl of Billings, MT; Tony (Wendy) Riehl of Billings, MT; Rita (Gene) Skoglund of Beach, ND; Theresa (Dean) Henderson of Colorado Springs, CO; Cil (John) Byrne of Oklahoma City, OK; Loretta (Fred) Michels of Shepherd, MT; Susan (Ken) Koch of Shields, ND; Dan (Amy Schnell) Riehl of Mesa, AZ; Annette (Kirk) Hoff of Mandan, ND; Rebecca (Damian) Geyer of Bismarck, ND; 45 grandchildren, 65 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ted, her parents, six brothers, Ray, Art, Leo, Reverend George, Reverend Joseph and Reverend Wilfrid Splonskowski; her four sisters, Anne Huber, Sister Anita, Sister Angelica and Sister David Splonskowski; her daughter-in-law, Amy Jo Riehl, and grandson, Lyle Kipp.
