Janice Newell

Janice Irene Newell, age 74, wife and mother of five, passed away in the early hours of August 9th, 2022, in Bismarck North Dakota, surrounded by her family.

Memorial Service will be held at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, located at 432 N West Street in Hebron, North Dakota, on Saturday August 20th @ 4:00pm.

Janice was born on November 2nd, 1947, in St. Paul Minnesota.  Daughter of George and Irene (DuRose) Carvelli. In 1964 she graduated from Harding High School. In 1967 she married the love of her life, Timothy Newell. Together they adventured all over the United States, Minnesota, Florida, Wisconsin, Washington, Colorado, and many more, while raising their family. They raised five children along the way and had many beloved horses, dogs, and cats.

She loved children, flowers, gardening, animals, chatting with friends, silly projects with the grandkids, and always a good sale. Jan had faith in the Bible’s promises of the future and was strong in her beliefs as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. She took on many roles from wife and mother to restaurant owner and entrepreneur, to name a just few. She was an amazing cook and always loved making her family good home cooked meals. She was generous and always made her home a welcome place. She loved feeding large groups of people and planning special events. Her children and grandchildren will always carry on this tradition.

She loved saving memories. Whether it was a silly rock her kids painted for an anniversary present they made when they were little, or something cherished of her mother’s. She loved collecting antiques, knickknacks, and silly mementos. She cherished and held on to each special item. When the time came she did not love the ordinary label of grandma. So through a series of events she got the nickname of Zumu. Many times, when her grandkids were learning to talk, she even got called ZooZoo and loved it. She will always be our Zumu.

Zumu loved animals big and small and endeared that to her children and grandchildren. Whenever there was a special occasion they got presents from not only Zumu and Grandpa, but also presents signed and wrapped from every animal in the family. She was terrified of snakes! Her children and grandchildren knew this, and she was always a good sport about their pranks and naughty attempts to scare her.

Janice loved her mother so much that all throughout her life, they spoke on the phone almost every single night. She loved camping and fishing, even when they got to a count of five kids, they still took them all on every adventure.  She enjoyed family horseback trips into the mountains, many camping and fishing trips, and taking the grandkids on rides on the pontoon boat.

She is survived by her husband of 55 years, Timothy Newell; her five children and eight grandchildren. This includes: daughter Jennifer and grandchildren Ethan and Isabelle; son Benjamin Newell and wife Marisa; son Andrew Newell and wife Adrianne and grandchildren children Sophia and Camryn; daughter Rebekka Brewer and grandchildren Brandon and Elizabeth; daughter Sarah Lewis and husband BJ and grandchildren Scott and Reece; Janice’s brother Daniel Carvelli. Along with many other loved, extended family members. She was preceded in death by her parents George and Irene Carvelli and brother Michael Carvelli.
