Vern L. Heim

One of Kidder County’s biggest sports fan will be cheering from above. Vern Heim, 85, dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on July 28th, 2022 at the Bismarck Baptist Home. 

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2022 at the United Methodist Church in Steele. 

Visitation will be 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, August 2, 2022 with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. also at the United Methodist Church in Steele.

Vern was born on March 18th, 1937 at the family farm south of Heil, ND. Vern attended country schools and then went on to Leith High School, graduating in 1955. Vern then attended the Gale Institute in Minneapolis where he earned his Telegrapher Certificate and worked for Northern Pacific and Burlington Northern Railroad for 43 years. Vern’s career included constant travel in Montana, Minnesota, South Dakota, and North Dakota.

He married his High School sweetheart, Marlene Kamrath, in 1958. The first eight months of their marriage, they moved 13 times and lived in an itty-bitty trailer.  Vern and Marlene were blessed with a large and loving family. Their romance lasted 64 ½ years and were blessed with four wonderful children, twins Russ and Rhonda, Steve, Lana Beth, and when the spouses came along we had the delightful eight, which grew into 10 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren. Vern thoroughly enjoyed hunting and fishing with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  He lived for and attended countless sporting activities, watching his family participate. While attending these sporting activities, he was known for his love of burnt hotdogs, orange pop and snicker bars. 

Vern and his family were long time members of the Presbyterian Church in Steele, He will be remembered for ringing the bell every Sunday morning before the service. Vern was very active throughout the community, always willing to contribute when the need arose.

Vern is survived by his loving wife, Marlene; four children, Russ & Andrea, Rhonda & Junior, Steve & Pam, Lana Beth & Brad; grandchildren include, Mandy (Bryan) Rath, Brandon (Amber) Binder, Megan (Chad) Auer, Jared (Melissa) Binder, Reggie (Amanda) Heim, Chad (Hilary) Heim, Stephanie Heim(Cameron Horning), Kyle Heim, Justin Persson, and Kayla Persson; and 14 great-grandchildren, Teanna Binder, Jayden Rath, Hunter Binder, Cyrus Auer, Avery Rath, Nehemiah Auer, Beau Binder, Blake Binder, Madelynn Auer, Haileigh Heim, Maddison Heim, Aubrie Heim, Izzy Heim, Knox Horning. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edmund & Mary Heim; brothers, Lester and Ervin; and sister, Delores.
