Arnold T. “Arnie” Stein, 66, Minot, formerly of Surrey, died Monday, July 18, 2022, in his home.

Arnie was born on Dec. 11, 1955 to Johanna (Schafer) and Lawrence Stein of Mandan. At an early age they moved to Minot and Arnie was educated in Minot Public Schools. In 1974 he married Brenda (Edinger) Willoughby. They were later divorced. He was united in marriage for 35 years to Cheryl Dobrinski in Makoti in 1976.

Arnie worked a variety of jobs over the years in manufacturing, welding, buildings and grounds maintenance, roofing and canvas repair. He also had his own canvas repair and roofing companies for a time. Most recently he was employed by Ace Hardware of Minot in small engine repair.

Arnie liked the outdoors–fishing, camping and hunting. He enjoyed playing pool, reading, history and watching old westerns. His love of history, horses and the old West led to his joining Custer 7th Cavalry Company M and was a founding member of the Frontier Army at the Dakota, 1870s military reenacting and living history organizations. That hobby led to roles as a background reenactor in movies and tv productions, including “Return to Lonesome Dove” and “Dances With Wolves.” He also was a model at the annual western Artist Ride held on the Cheyenne River in South Dakota and featured in several of the artists’ paintings.

Arnie was an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Surrey, serving on the church council and as a Sunday school teacher. For many years he was active with the Surrey Fire Protection, and also belonged to the Makoti Thresher’s Association. Arnie was a long time member of the North Dakota State Parade Committee.

Following his divorce from Cheryl in 2011, he moved to Minot.

Arnie is survived by his children Michael Stein, Jennifer (Guy Hanley) Stein, and Kristi (Mark) Schaefer, all of Minot and their mother, Cheryl Stein, Surrey; grandchildren Britton (Cody George) Bissette, Brenna Stein, Devin Stein, Emma (John) Burckhard and Jack, Oliver and Henry Schaefer; great-grandchildren Roman and Caius Bissette, Gatlin and Oslo George, Laila Stein, Bella Guerrero and Sophie Burckhard; sister Laura (Kevin) Clouse, Langdon, ND; brothers Larry (Tina) Stein, Wabash, IN, Ronald (Jeanne) Stein, Minot, and Todd (Marilyn) Stein, Sawyer, along with numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
