Patricia “Pat” Ostby
June 4, 1940 – July 12, 2022
Patricia “Pat” A. Ostby, 82, Garrison, died on Tuesday, July 12, 2022, at the Garrison memorial
Hospital Nursing Facility. Memorial services will be help on Wednesday, August 10, 2022, at St.
Nicholas Catholic Church in Garrison. Burial will be held at the Garrison City Cemetery.
Our mother was born on June 4, 1940, in Rockford, Illinois to Lee and Ruth (Neblock) Medlin.
On November 1, 1957, she married Vernon Ostby, Sr. and in 1958 they moved to the family
farm near Douglas. After a house fire in 1967, they moved the family to Garrison. She began
her working career in 1970 first at Johnson’s Red Owl as a cashier and then at the Benedictine
Living Center where she was beginning as a cook and ending in the laundry. She completed her
GED in 1983 and she was very proud of that accomplishment. She served her community with
the Garrison Ambulance Service and St. Paul Lutheran Church as a choir member and in the
WELCA. She was known and loved by many people in and around Garrison and she will be
greatly missed.
Our mother left this earth with her family around her. She will be laid to rest next to her
husband of 59 years, Vernon, Sr. Pat was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Ruth
Medlin; in-laws, Ole and Erna Ostby; brothers, Darwin Medlin and Jerry Yankowskas; brothersin-law Joe Roach, Norman Ostby, David Birkholz, JJ Foree, Fred Mohn, and Bernard Bendickson;
sisters-in-law, Verna Medlin, Celesta Ostby, Shirley Birkholz, Audrey Mohn, and LeAnn Watson
Pigeon. She is survived by her children; Vernon, Jr., Glenda (John) Sorensen, and Letha
(Michael) Szczur; sisters, Florence (Calvin) Bond and Gloria (Jerry) Penrod; sisters-in-law, Louise
Yankowskas, Carol Foree, and Lora Bendickson; 17 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and
many nieces and nephews.
“We love you very much and you will always be in our hearts. We are so thankful that God
chose you to be our mother.” Vernon, Jr., Glenda, and Letha
