Cory Jaymeson Stargazer Young, 36, Minot, died Saturday, June 11, 2022, in Sioux Falls, SD.

Cory was born October 20, 1985, in Grand Forks, ND to Marcel and Vivian (Martin) Young. He moved with his family to Minot in 1989 and graduated from Minot High School in 2004, where he excelled as an athlete in soccer and hockey.  Cory played hockey for the Los Angeles Junior Kings (Midget AAA) and the Long Beach Bombers (Junior B). He finished his hockey career at Minot State University. He attended the University of Edmonton in Alberta, Canada for a time. He enjoyed sports his entire life. Cory went to ceremonies. He fasted and practiced Cree indigenous ways.

Cory called Minot home for a majority of his life. He was burdened his entire life with a mental health diagnosis. He battled addiction. His struggles were supported by close friends, family and health professionals.

Cory was a smart and talented man. He was a natural born artist who completed high school art assignments with ease. He created beautiful pottery and works of art from pencil and acrylic paint that amazed his mother and father. Irrespective of subject most of his artwork is layered, complex and symbolizes his brother’s and sister. He will be missed most by all who were blessed to share in his life.

Cory is survived by his loving family that includes his parents, Marcel and Vivian Young, Minot; siblings Marcel ‘Bud’ (Shannon) Young, Long Beach, CA, Bradley (Andrea) Young, The Pas, MB, Canada, Zane (Dally) Young, Des Moines, IA and Shinoah (Joshua) Cheechoo, Edmonton, AB, Canada; nieces and nephews include Alexander and Emily Young, Nakaw (Kym) Young, Wase Young and Anis Nina Young, Wonhee and Sunwoo Young and Sequoia and Ambrose Cheechoo and a great-nephew Leto Young; along with numerous aunts, uncles and many cousins, too many to list.

Cory was preceded in death by his grandparents John and Elizabeth (Bignell) Young and Archibald and Miriam Elizabeth (Nasekapow) Martin.

Funeral Service: 10:00 a.m. Saturday, June 18, 2022, at All Saints Episcopal Church, Minot.
Interment:  Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation:  Friday, June 17, 2022, from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Thomas Family Funeral Home, Minot.
Memorials are preferred in lieu of plants and flowers to organizations devoted to providing care to those who struggle with mental health and/or homelessness.
