Sally A. Pfeiffer, 77, loving wife, mother, sister, and friend, passed away on Sunday, May 30, 2021 at Missouri Slope Lutheran Care Center. Sally was born on March 12, 1944 in Dickinson, to Albert and Eleanor (Reddy) Zastoupil, graduated from Dickinson Central High School in 1962, and upon graduation moved to California with her girlfriends to “see the world.” On September 19, 1964, she married Roger Pfeiffer in Dickinson, after a courtship that may have started during her waitressing days at the Buckaroo where she fondly remembered that he always ordered a ribeye steak. They lived on the Dickinson airport with a dog Turk before moving to Bismarck where they raised two children, Karmen and Linden, along with more pets.
In her younger years, Sally played the cello (too much according to her sister), she studied Latin (which isn’t really spoken in North Dakota), and babysat every day after school. She worked at AT&T as a telephone operator (long before cell phones) and at AVIS before choosing to stay home to raise her children. She later worked at Bismarck Hospital and Dayton’s when her kids went off to college.
Sally was a member of the Epsilon Sigma Alpha International sorority, where she made lifelong friends through their service work together. Sally also loved volunteering at her church, with refugees, and in her community. She had a passion for arts, crafts, and sewing, which included a few prom dresses and a wedding veil. She was an avid reader her entire life and learned much through reading because she didn’t have the opportunity to attend college.
She is best remembered for her no-nonsense approach to life, her quick wit, sassy spirit, and her loving, encouraging, and patient nature. You always knew where you stood with her and she always made good on her word. She was ahead of her time in so many ways, except for cooking dinner (unless it was from the frozen Schwan truck).
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at 11:00 am at House of Prayer Lutheran Church, 1470 S. Washington St., Bismarck. Please join her family for a celebratory reception at 12:00 pm following the service to share stories and celebrate with a “Coke and a Smile” because she didn’t want a big fuss about her trip to the Pearly Gates.
Sally was preceded in death by her parents; her brother, Al; and her sister, Shirley Nandory.
She is survived by her husband of 56 years; daughter, Dr. Karmen Sorenson (Bart); son, Dr. Linden Pfeiffer (Julie); grandchildren, Bridger Sorenson and Aiden, Elias, and Olivia Pfeiffer; sisters, Marcella, Cindy; and brother, Dean.
