Marilyn Grotewold, 91, passed away peacefully at Missouri Slope on May 19, 2021. She succumbed to an injury and complications from a fall. According to Marilyn, the only thing to write for my obituary is: “I came, I saw, I traveled, I went.”
A funeral service will be held 12 noon Wednesday, June 2, at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service. A luncheon will follow the service. A service livestream will be available on the funeral home’s website.
Burial will be 3 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Marilyn was born in Minneapolis on March 23, 1930 to Myrtle and Stan Lee. She grew up mostly in Minneapolis while her dad worked for Minneapolis Moline. Marilyn and Dwayne were married July 27, 1950. They became parents to Susan and Keith. They lived in Larchwood, IA from 1950 to 1957, and later moved to Le Mars, IA, from 1958 to 1970 where they owned and operated Grotewold Chevrolet.
In 1970 Marilyn, Dwayne and the family moved to Bismarck and opened Hatch’s Hallmark in Kirkwood Mall. Marilyn enjoyed wintering in Arizona and taking multiple trips abroad with her daughter.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Dwayne; her parents; brother, Ron Lee; brother-in-law, Dwight Grotewold; sisters-in-law, Charlotte, and Betty Grotewold.
She is survived by her children, Susan (Carl) Hendershott, Fargo, and Keith (Diane), Bismarck; brother-in-law, Roger (Gayl), CA; sisters-in-law, Lois Grotewold, AZ; Bonnie Lee, GA; Joanne Lee, SC; and several nephews and a niece.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff at Missouri Slope for the wonderful care they provided to Marilyn.
