Obituary

Betty Ann Kostelecky, 87, Mandan, went home to her Heavenly father on March 28, 2022, at Miller Pointe in Mandan, surrounded by her family after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, April 1, 2022, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mandan, ND with Rev. Josh Waltz as celebrant. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery.

Visitation will be held Thursday, March 31, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 PM at BUEHLER LARSON FUNERAL HOME, Mandan, with a Rosary/Parish Vigil at 7:00 PM. Visitation will continue at the church one hour prior to the service on Friday.

Betty was born on June 26, 1934, in Crown Butte, ND to Dominick and Eva (Stein) Zander. She grew up on the family farm with her four sisters.

Betty married Albert Kostelecky on June 30, 1954, at St. Vincents. Together they had eight children.

Betty enjoyed sewing and often made her girls’ outfits. She loved vegetable gardens, canning, crafting, crocheting, sewing, and quilting. Betty loved to bake bread. Her children could tell that it was bread making day several blocks away because they could smell the bread baking while walking home from school. She cherished her family and was extremely selfless. Betty was a hard worker.

Betty’s strong Christian faith was evident in her lifestyle with regular church attendance and daily prayers. She was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church where she was a regular reader at mass. She was also a member of the Catholic Daughters of America.

Betty and Albert loved to travel. They traveled to Germany, Mexico, Hawaii, as well as many places throughout the United States. One of her greatest passions was camping. You would often find them at Lake Five with the kids and grandkids or at Lake Sakakawea.

Betty is survived by her husband of 67 years, Albert; children, Jerome, Little Canada, MN, Diane (Doug) Sjolander, Moorhead, MN, Robert, West Fargo, Eugene, Fargo, Sue (Steve) Fangman, Carrington, Allen (Shelly), Bismarck, Mark (Lola), Mandan, Nancy (Mike) Friesz, Mandan; grandchildren, Rose Leese, Anne Smith, Kristen McCabe, Daniel Sjolander, Bradley Sjolander, Paige Ostlund, Brandon Kostelecky, Melinda Brekke, Keith Fangman, Tyler Kostelecky, Lacey Reede, Maegan Friesz, Jacob Friesz, Mariah Friesz, George Evans, Sarah Bosch; 26 great-grandchildren; sisters, Eva (Robert) Delone, Gloria (John) Kraft, Margie Ferderer; brother-in-law, John Aman; and sister-in-law, MaryAnn Powell.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Dominick and Eva; sister, Rose Hopfauf and her husband, Pete Hopfauf; daughter-in-law, Vivian Kostelecky; brother-in-law, Delano Ferderer; sister-in-law, Eleanor Aman; mother-in-law, Mary Aman; Richard and Margaret Weber; Tony and Rose Landeis; and Louie and Martha Novothy.

Betty’s family sends a sincere thank you to Miller Pointe including the 200 unit, nurses, CNAs, doctors, residents, social workers, and all the friends she made while staying there.
