Viona was born August 9, 1923, in Washburn, North Dakota to John and Margaret (Wessner) Grueneich. After graduating high school in 1942, she lived in Seattle, Washington, for about five years where she worked at a bank. She moved back to Bismarck in 1948 and worked at the Bank of North Dakota for five years.

Viona married Ruben Schlichenmayer in 1951. They had two children, son Darby and daughter Sherry. Viona’s family was the loving focus of her servant heart. She was a wonderful cook and baker, making delicious Sunday dinners for her family for many years, which bonded us as a family. She enjoyed babysitting her grandchildren, gardening with Ruben and canning the produce.

She was a member of Bismarck Baptist Church and her Christian faith was of utmost importance to her.

Viona is survived by her son, Darby (Barb) Schlichenmayer; daughter, Sherry (Brad) Legreid; grandsons, Josh (Katie) Schlichenmayer, Luke (Danelle) Schlichenmayer, and J. Morgan (Sarah) Legreid, all of Bismarck; granddaughter, Janell (Zach) Burkart, of Xenia, Ohio; great-grandchildren, Teagan, Jaela, Huxten, Vaeda Schlichenmayer; Eden, Jasper Schlichenmayer; and sister-in-law, Vera Schlichenmayer.

Viona was preceded in death by her husband, Ruben; her parents; and all her siblings, Johanna Bader, Emma Johnson, Bertha Steinwand, Martha Koenig, Lorraine Grenz, Ella Aman, and Ed, Bennie, John Grueneich.
