Wanda Smith, 87, Minot and formerly of Sawyer died on Sunday, March 13, 2022 in a Minot hospital.

Wanda Mae was born on August 31, 1934 in Bismarck, ND to Stanley and Esther (Hansen) Frandsen. She was raised in Sanger, Mandan and Steele in North Dakota and attended Steele High School in 1950.  She was proud to have earned her GED later in life.

Wanda married Vernon Smith on September 23, 1951 at Steele, ND. They made their home in Florida, Steele and Park Rapids MN prior to moving to Minot in 1966. The family moved to Deering in 1971 where Wanda was employed as a cook at the Deering High School for 3.5 years.  They moved back to Minot for a few years before settling in Sawyer in 1987. Vernon died on June 18, 1995.

Wanda remained in Sawyer until July of 2007 when she moved to Minot. She had been struggling with memory issues for the past two years. She had resided at the Wellington Assisted Living Center since January of 2022.

Wanda was a member and volunteer at Bread of Life Lutheran Church in Minot and formerly a member of St. Peter’s Lutheran Church – Sawyer.  Also, she was a member of the Benedict American Legion Auxiliary and a former member of the Minot Eagles Aerie and Minot Curling Club. She especially enjoyed traveling, photography and gardening.

Wanda’s greatest joy and source of pride was always her family, particularly her 13 grandchildren and 17 great grandchildren. Her love for them all was unconditional and complete. She never missed wishing each of them a happy birthday, either in person or with a card or phone call. Over the years she attended dozens and dozens of sporting events, musical performances or school functions. And she never missed a chance to boast on her grandkids amongst her other grandma friends. She always claimed to win the grandkids tally both in quantity, and quality.

Wanda’s loving family includes her children: Kurt (Ann) Smith and Ken (Kathy) Smith all of Lake Havasu City, AZ, Cindy (John) Bryantt of Des Lacs and Beth (Craig) Grabow of Donnybrook; grandchildren: Shannon Krueger and Meghan Smith; Nicole (Erik) Espeseth, Celeste (Steve) Bradford, Dustin (Julie) Voeller, Toniel (Chris) Beebe and Kelby Smith (Alex Lahti); Slade (Michele) Bryantt, Drew (Lisa) Bryantt, Kelsey (Tricia) Melfy and Lance (Randi) Grabow, Cody (Audrey) Grabow and Lexi Grabow (Carsten Espeseth); great grandchildren: Gage and Cale Krueger, Collin and Carter Espeseth, Caleb and Belle Bradford, Dane, Brody and Reed Voeller, Cash and Jace Beebe, Keagan Smith, Brody and Parks Bryantt, Kylin and Hudson Bryantt and Ben Grabow; brother: Dallis (JoAnne) Frandsen of Wabasha, MN and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
