With great sadness the family of James “Jim” Schmidt, 75, Bismarck, announces his passing on Feb 3, 2022. Jim was surrounded by his loving family and friends. Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 9 at Church of the Ascension, 1825 S Third St., Bismarck.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Parkway Funeral Service, 2330 Tyler Pkwy, Bismarck. A vigil service will begin at 7 p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the church service on Wednesday.
Burial will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.
Jim was born March 7, 1946 to George and Magdaline (Heinert) Schmidt. Jim attended Bismarck High School. Then in 1964, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. During his military days, he spent time in Thailand. Following his honorable discharge, he attended Humboldt Institute Airline School in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and then worked for Western Airlines for 10 years. He married Isabel Wald on June 15, 1968 at Church of St. Anne’s in Bismarck. They made their home in Eagan, MN. In 1974, Jim attended Metropolitan State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in business and administration. While working for Western Airlines, Jim and Isabel had many opportunities to travel to several tropical areas and to Germany. They returned to Bismarck in 1998 when Jim worked in sales. The last four years, Jim worked for Harlow’s as a bus driver. He enjoyed spending time with the children and seeing their smiling faces!
Jim loved being a grandparent to six grandchildren, who fulfilled his life. He also enjoyed cooking. He would find a recipe and think of ways to improve it. He perfected his pickle recipe, and they were a great snack enjoyed by many. In the summer months, he tended to his flower and vegetable gardens. During the football season, he cheered on the Vikings and the Bisons. Jim also enjoyed a good a casino run and a warm summer day on the river with friends.
Jim is survived by his wife, Isabel; daughters, Tina (Daniel) Zimlich, Oakdale, MN., and Denise (Marty) Hebig, Lantana, TX; six grandchildren, Logan, Justin, Stephanie, Natalie, Brandon and Dylan; sisters, Leona Beehler, Mandan, Linda Strandemo, Bismarck, Nancy (Bruce) Schmidt, Bismarck, Kathy (Dennis) Kittleson, MT, and Beatrice (Ron) Deuel, IN; brothers, Gene (Pam) Schmidt, Mandan, and Bob (Shirley) Schmidt, Denton, TX.; and many friends and extended family.
Jim was proceeded in death by his parents George and Magdaline, and sister Eleanor Aman.
