Bernice C. Bornemann, 93, of Center, ND passed away on Wednesday, February 2, 2022, at Elm Crest Manor in New Salem.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 AM CT on Tuesday, February 8, 2022, at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hannover, ND with Reverend Zelwyn Heide officiating. Burial will take place at Hannover Cemetery.

Visitation will be held on Monday, February 7, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Buehler- Larson Funeral Home in Mandan. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Tuesday.

Bernice was born January 23, 1929, to Herman and Lena Henke. She attended the Country School in Hannover through Grade 8. She graduated high school in New Salem and went on to work at the ND State Capitol.

On September 18, 1949, she married Burton Bornemann and together they were blessed with five children. Besides being a wife and mother on our farm in Hannover, in 1978 she also took a job as a Register of Deeds/Clerk of Court for Oliver County until 2000. In 1990, our parents moved to Center, ND.

She was a lifelong member of St. Peter Lutheran Church and was active in the choir, handbells, LWML, and in-home Bible study with friends.

Mom loved to sing – you could see it on her face. She sang in the Glee Club in high school and then in the church choir where she was known for her “Star of the East” solo at Christmas. She also sang in the Center Community Choir and in the Center Stage musical. She enjoyed singing in the Great Room at Elm Crest before her passing.

Mom enjoyed playing cards with family and friends. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She is survived by her five children, Diane Heagle of Fargo, Tim (Doretta) Bornemann of Mandan, Kay (Tony) Aguilar of San Antonio, TX, Russell (Dawn) Bornemann of Hannover, and Karen (LeRoy) Hintz of West Fargo; 14 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren with two more on the way; two brothers-in-law, Dale and Larry Bornemann; three sisters-in-law, Lois Bornemann, Dawn Bornemann, and Lilly Henke; and many nieces and nephews.

The new life of the youngest great-granddaughter born on February 2, 2022, brings joy out of the sadness of losing our mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Burton, of 67 years; her parents; son-in-law, Greg Heagle; sister, Edna Kaelberer; and brother, Raymond Henke.

In 1986, mom wrote down her memories and gave each of us a copy. The very last paragraph reads, “The Lord has richly blessed us spiritually as well as in material things. Our richest earthly blessing, by far, is you children, your spouses, and now our grandchildren. God bless you always. We love you all very much.”
