Florence Kabanuk Soltis, 98, Minot, died Monday, January 17, 2022 in a Fargo nursing home.
Florence Mae Chelgren was born on August 30, 1923 on the family farm in Newman Township of Ward County near Sawyer, ND to Edwin and Margaret (Michelson) Chelgren. She was raised on the family farm and attended country schools. She continued her education at Minot State College.
Florence married Arthur Kabanuk on December 25, 1943 at First Baptist Church in Minot. Following Art’s discharge from the U.S. Army they made their home in Minot, where Florence was employed at the Northwest Clinic and Art attended Minot State University.
Following Art’s graduation from college, the family resided in several ND communities where Art was employed as a teacher. For several years they resided in Jamestown where Florence was a fulltime wife, mother and homemaker and was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church in the Ladies Circle group and taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School.
Florence moved to Minot in 1968, where she was employed by Coleman Taube at his women’s clothing store until the business was sold. Then, she became employed at the Ramada Inn where she worked for 14 years. Florence married O.E. Soltis in 1984. They made their home in Minot. He died June 15, 1994. She continued to make her home in Minot until she moved to Fargo where she was closer to her son and his family.
Florence was a member of First Lutheran Church- Minot where she served in the Altar Guild and several other areas. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Her hobbies included, reading, sewing, spending time with family and friends, especially her grandchildren.
Florence’s loving family includes her children: Elliott (Denise) Kabanuk, Fargo, Pamela (Curtis) Everson, Minot; stepsons: Robert (Joy) Soltis, Washington and Jim (Vicki) Soltis, Minot; grandchildren: Jeffrey Transgrud, Tammy Transgrud, Kirsten (Richard) Snyder, Gwen (John Hulse) Askew, Ashley (Allan) Simpson, Elisha (Jeff) Hoye, Lance (Kara) Kabanuk and Krina (Steve) Larson; 19 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and several step grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
Florence was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, LaVonne Abel, husband O.E. Soltis, sister, Edna (Melvin) Johnson and brother, Alvin (Mary) Chelgren.
Celebration of the Life of Florence Kabanuk Soltis: Saturday, January 22, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. in the Thomas Family Funeral Home Chapel, Minot. A livestream of the service will be available by accessing https://www.mtmsales.net/thomas
Interment: Rosehill Memorial Park, Minot.
Visitation will be one hour prior to the service.
Memorials are preferred to First Lutheran Church or an organization of the donor’s choice.
