Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM, Friday, January 21, 2022 at Bismarck Funeral Home with a prayer service starting at 7:00 PM.

Nancy was born on October 20, 1944, to Leonard and Eva (Braun) Tomek. The family followed Leonards work from one small town to the next, eventually settling in Bismarck. Nancy graduated from Bismarck High School in 1962. She moved to Bozeman, Montana and worked in a record store, where she enjoyed hearing the latest music and meeting new people. In 1963, she moved back to Bismarck and met Keith Doughty. They were married in 1964 and had two daughters, Maureen and Lisa.

Nancy worked part-time as a cashier at the Warehouse Market and as the resident ear-piercing specialist at Herbst. She then began a long career as a secretary with Melroe, retiring in 2004. During her tenure at Melroe, Nancy was involved in the National Management Association, attending meetings and banquets, always eager to learn new skills. Nancy also enjoyed bowling in a league with her coworkers for several years.

A perfectionist with a keen eye for detail and dogged determination, her mastery of wallpaper was unmatched. When Nancy finished wallpapering a room, not a bubble or seem could be found. Nancy loved to crochet afghans, sweaters, and scarves, for family and friends. She often had a sewing or upholstery project to work on. She enjoyed sketching pictures of her kids and pets. She enjoyed playing Scrabble, Trivial Pursuit, Canasta, Gin and many other games. In recent years, she could be found in friendly competition with her sister Jan playing internet-based games. For many years she was very involved in church and taught Sunday school and vacation bible school.

Nancy and Keith spent many weekends in the summer fishing on Lake Sakakawea. In the winter, they looked forward to visiting friends in Nevada and Arizona. They enjoyed the area, especially the climate, and talked about moving to Arizona after retirement. Unfortunately, Keith passed away before that could happen. Nancy moved with Maureen to Virginia in the fall of 2020, then to Arizona in the spring of 2021. She enjoyed the warm sun and “chasing” the beautiful desert sunsets.

Nancy was quick to start up a conversation and made new friends everywhere she went. She was generous and kind, even to people she didn’t know.

Nancy is survived by her daughters, Maureen Kendall of Chandler, Arizona, and Lisa (Bruce) Murry of Bismarck; grandchildren, Kathryn (Jordie) Alexander of Bismarck, Erika Murry of Minot, and Perrin Murry of Bismarck; sisters, Pat (Don) Ehlis of Bismarck; Jan (Ev) Hellman of Bismarck; Betty (Don) Wagner of Baldwin, ND; and brother, Tom (Kay) Tomek of Texas.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Keith; her parents; nephew, Brian Wolf; and niece, Darcy Wagner.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Nancy’s name to your favorite charity, church or scholarship fund.
