Wendlin (Wendy) Anton Striefel, 85, Minot, passed away Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

Wendlin was born August 8, 1936, in Anamoose, North Dakota. The youngest son of Andrew and Genevieve (Wenninger) Striefel, he grew up on a farm. Gardening, hunting, and fishing were activities that entertained him throughout an adventure-filled life.

In 1959, he married his love, Lila Lorenz, and from this union, three children arrived: Brian, Ardin, and Holly. They camped and fished their way through warm North Dakota summers, the boys hunting and ice fishing by season, everyone listening to his favorite artist, Eddy Arnold, on quiet Sunday mornings. Wendlin and Lila eventually traveled widely. He attended Bismarck State College and was employed by the North Dakota Department of Transportation (NDDOT) working throughout the state, before coming to the Minot District. Many who knew him were surprised by his ability to solve complicated mathematical problems without writing anything down. Starting as a surveyor, he eventually managed large road construction projects, bridges a particular specialty. He retired in 1996 after 41 years of service.

Wendlin’s infectious smile and twinkling eyes inspired everyone around him. He spent quality time with grandchildren, making his famous milkshakes, playing Monkey, dominoes, hunting, fishing, and watching tornados when grandma wanted everyone in the basement. He especially enjoyed sitting in deer stands on Lila’s family farm and enjoying all the wildlife all around him. His annual grackle standoff, waged from a bedroom window, saved most of the world’s songbirds.

Wendlin was a member of Bread of Life Lutheran Church, The Moose Lodge, Elks Lodge and Eagles Aerie, all of Minot. Our family would like to extend a sincere ‘thank you’ to the staff of the Garrison Memorial Nursing Facility for the exceptional care provided to Wendlin in his final time with us.

Wendlin is survived by his wife of 62 years, Lila, sons Brian (Anita) and Ardin (ChrisAnn), daughter Holly (Mark) Mosser, grandchildren Cody (Kelsey), Alyssa (Jeremy), Sean (Shelby), Chelsea, Carson, Blake, great-grandchildren Jack and Axel, sister Marceline Hoaglund, and many nieces and nephews.

Wendlin was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Bernard, and Daniel.
