Kathleen Mary Engelhard Hall was born to Edmund and Olivia Engelhard on September 21, 1937 in Devils Lake, the youngest of three children. There she attended Saint Mary’s Academy where she met her future husband, Donald Arthur Hall. They married in 1959 and commenced raising a family of four children. Donald’s job with the ND Army National Guard brought them to Bismarck in 1970. A tradition of military service ensued, extending to all four children, two sons-in-law, and four grandchildren. Kathe used to say that she was the one with a life time military commitment.
From her early years, Kathe was surrounded by music. The entire family sang, (often in German) or learned a musical instrument. She carried on this custom with her own children. Kathe herself excelled in singing, and throughout her life was often invited to perform. Music enriched her life immeasurably, invoking much joy and laughter. Driving long distances especially was an opportunity to while away the miles in chorus. Church services, routine daily chores, camping and holidays were all an occasion to raise our voices in song. Any event turned into a jubilant celebration when her dear friend Jean Hulm accompanied on guitar.
Kathe was a member of Friends of the Belle, raising funds to restore the Belle Mehus Auditorium. She supported the Bismarck Mandan Symphony Orchestra with fundraising and was a long-time season ticket holder. Kathe was an active member and past president of the Bismarck Mandan Thursday Music Club. For many years she performed with the Bismarck Mandan Civic Chorus. She participated in many choral events throughout the years, and lent her voice to the choir of Saint Anne Catholic Church, where she was an involved parishioner for more than 50 years.
Kathe is a former Girl Scout Leader. She was proud to achieve a Bachelor of College Studies degree from the former Mary College of Bismarck in 1984. She was employed by the Social Services Department of Saint Alexius Hospital for nearly 20 years. She volunteered at the ND Heritage Center, and founded a chapter of the Red Hats Society. Don and Kathe were able to travel after retirement, visiting friends and family across the country. She enjoyed three extended stays in Japan with their daughter Joyce and family, as well as a cruise to Alaska.
Kathleen is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of 62 years, Donald Arthur Hall; two daughters, Joyce (Daniel) Hessman, Bismarck and Sara (Mitchell) Abel, Indianapolis; and two sons, Michael (Joan) Hall and David (Susan) Hall both of Bismarck; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Dolores Seashore, Hopkins MN; a brother, Eugene Engelhard,
Gresham OR; one sister-in-law, Mary Jane Hanson, Byron MN and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and Donald’s parents, Hildreth and Magdalena Hall; Donald’s siblings, Margaret Rose (Michael) Centra, Marcella (Jim) Shorey and Robert Hall; and her brothers-in-law, Charles Seashore and Dennis Hanson.
The family is especially grateful to the caring and compassionate staff of Dakota Home Care, especially Sasha, who developed a wonderful bond of trust with our mother.
Friends may leave a memory or message of condolence at Parkway Funeral Services. In lieu of flowers, please consider a contribution to one of the following, her beloved organizations: Bismarck Mandan Symphony Orchestra, Bismarck Mandan Civic Chorus, or Bismarck Mandan Thursday Music Club, c/o Denise Anderson, President, 1312 Territory Drive, Bismarck ND 58503.
