Evelyn was born on December 14, 1939, in Hague to John and Elizabeth (Goldade) Mastel. She grew up on the family farm north of Hague. She attended country school until the eighth grade. Evelyn went on to obtain her GED years later. She continued her education at Capital Commercial College.
Evelyn married Ed Jochim on September 7, 1959, at St. Aloysius Catholic Church. They have two daughters and one grandson.
In Evelyn’s earlier years, she babysat for Mike and Sue Jordan. She loved taking care of them and raised them as if they were her own. She worked various jobs before starting with the Bank of North Dakota in the Student Loan Department. Evelyn worked there for 28 years before she retired in May 2010.
Evelyn had many hobbies that included square dancing, of which she sewed her own dresses and matching shirts for Ed. She enjoyed playing cards, cross stitching, baking and decorating cakes. She made many birthday and wedding cakes for family and friends. She was an awesome baker! Sometimes it seemed she took a cake to work for someone almost weekly. She spent a lot of time in the kitchen doing what she loved.
Evelyn and Ed traveled to Canada and other various places through square dancing. They also traveled to Branson, Missouri, a few times. She idolized Daniel O’Donnell and enjoyed seeing him perform. They even traveled to Germany in 2010 which she really enjoyed.
Evelyn shared her life with her loving husband Ed for 62 years; two daughters, Karen (Kirk) Stephen and Deb (Ron) Hintz, and one very special grandson, Chad LaChapelle, who was the light of her life. She spoiled him rotten! She is also survived by her sister, Irene Meier; brother and sister-in-law, John and Judy Mastel; sister-in-law, Carol Mastel; in-laws, Albert and Darlene Jochim, Tillie (Carl) Jochim; and numerous nieces and nephews and so many dear friends.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents; her parents-in-law, Albert and Ottilia Jochim; sister and brother-in-law, Bernice and Aloys Holzer; brother, Leo Mastel; and niece, Bernadette Nelson.
We would like to thank the staff at Missouri Slope and her roommate and friend, Virginia, for taking care of our dear sweet Mom for the two past years.
We miss you already Mom – We will love you forever.
