Marie P. (Brigl) Albrecht was born in Mandan, North Dakota, on October 23, 1935.  She was the youngest of seven children born to Rose (Thomas) and Lorenz Brigl.  She spent her early years on the family homestead near Huff, North Dakota, moving to Mandan in 1940.   She graduated from Mandan High School in 1953.  In 1955, she married her high school sweetheart, Reinhold “Reinie” Albrecht.  Marie and Reinie shared 44 wonderful years together and were blessed with four children, seven grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, and a large extended family of relatives and friends.

After high school, Marie began her career with Q & R Clinic as a medical secretary and medical coder.  Ultimately, she became the assistant medical librarian, a position she held for thirty plus years retiring in 1996.  In that capacity, she took pride in also serving as the Cancer Registry Director and Editor of the Q & R Report.

Marie’s greatest joy was spending time with her family.  She was the family matriarch, a position for which she took great care, pride, and carried out enthusiastically.  She viewed families as quilts observing they tended to unravel at times but could be stitched back together with love and care.  Her life was a legacy of “loving stiches” that will forever be treasured and remembered in her many quilts, aprons, and other handmade treasures.

A lifelong thirst for knowledge and an innate capacity for problem-solving inspired her tough spirit and tender heart.  She loved to read, garden, and cook spending hours tending to flowers and trying new recipes.  She made friends everywhere she went and had a bag packed should opportunities to travel and learn new things arise.   She embraced technology and mastered online shopping, Facebook, cruising the Internet, and email particularly enjoying those activities in the very wee hours of the morning.

Marie is survived by her son, Randal (Darcie Hardy) Albrecht of Coleharbor; daughters, Laurie (Dennis) Voegele of Coleharbor; Jeanne Walstad of Bismarck, and Kathy Albrecht of Rochester, Minnesota; grandchildren, Jennifer (Michael) Granlie, Erin (Corey) Krueger, Jesse (Mika) Walstad, Chad Voegele, Kristi (Peter) Moch, Daniel (Timy Kukaj) Walstad, and Matthew (Lindsey) Walstad; great grandchildren Gracyn, Avery, Evan, Liam, Benjamin, Isaac, Amelia, Lila, Lee, Elijah, and Jonah; brother Julius Brigl; sister-in-law Marlene (Nova) Albrecht; many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews; and her life-long best friend Mary Small.

Marie was preceded in death by her husband Reinie; parents; brothers, Hank Brigl and Clemons Brigl; sisters, Sally Heck, Frona Zeno, and Amelia Hornack; son-in-law, John Walstad, and numerous sisters and brothers-in-law.

Marie’s family extends deep appreciation to the caregivers of Sanford Hospice, Primrose Assisted Living Community, and Spectrum for their professional and compassionate care and guidance.

In lieu of flowers, make donations to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery or donors’ choice.
