Ray Stein, 90, Richardton, died Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at St. Alexius Bismarck. Ray’s Mass of Christian Burial will be at 9 a.m., Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Richardton with Fr. Thomas Wordekemper, OSB as celebrant. Interment will take place at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan. Military Honors will be provided by the Richardton American Legion Theo R. Zech Post 180. Visitation will be on Monday from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. with a rosary and vigil at 7 p.m. at Ladbury Funeral Service, Dickinson with Deacon Robert Bohn presiding. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service at the church.
Raphael Emanuel Stein, Jr. was born December 28, 1930 in a farmhouse north of Taylor to Ray and Josephine (Wanner) Stein. He attended Ziner School until the age of 11 and then went to St. Mary’s School until moving south of Gladstone in 1943. During school he worked on a farm where he met Mabel Schabary who became his high school sweetheart. He attended school in Gladstone and graduated in 1949.
Ray and Mabel were united in marriage on June 15, 1953 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Gladstone. They moved to a farm north of Gladstone. He was drafted into the United States Army for two years and came home in 1955 and started life again with farming and ranching, and started a family, having four sons.
He enjoyed going fishing and to be with friends. He retired from the farm in 1998 when the moved to Richardton. While in town, he liked to take care of the garden and going to play cards, pinochle and another German game the older people played and of course going to the casino. He was famous for his pickled fish and he was an avid Minnesota Twins fan.
He was a director of Western Livestock in Dickinson and Farmers Union Cenex in Gladstone. He also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, St. Anthony and Eagles.
Ray is survived by his wife of 68 years, Mabel; four sons, Roger (Melanie) Stein, Dunn Center, Rodney “JR” Stein, Halliday, Russell (L’nette) Stein, Taylor and Rick (Kris) Stein, New Salem; seven grandchildren, Jessica (James) Metts, Ashley (TJ) Shantz, Dylan Stein, Dakota Stein, Paige Stein, Kaylee Stein and McKinzee (Dalton) Magill; brother, Leo (Tillie) Stein, Gladstone; sister-in-law, Ann Stein, Bismarck
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Bertha, John and Adeline; in-laws, Joseph and Barbara Schabary; and numerous nephews and nieces.
